Default 2013 ram 1500 oil?

Hi everybody, I have just purchased a used ram 1500 tradesman/express truck with 29,000 miles on it. The dealer I bought it from put regular 5w-30 oil in it, I read in the owners manual it said to use 5w-20 synthetic oil. I went and got this changed yesterday but had already put 250 miles on the 5w-30 oil will this had harmed the engine or vehicle in any way?

Thank you, Dillan

The Hemi went from 5W-30 to 5W-20 in 2006 when they added MDS (cylinder deactivation). I doubt it would harm your engine, but it would keep MDS from coming on and that could throw a code, since MDS is an oil pressure activated system.

I'm not sure how small The oil passages in the heads are, which is the only reason I could see it causing damage, but if you only went 250 miles and didn't drive like a maniac then I seriously doubt that you caused the engine any harm.

The Hemi is probably the most reliable and durable gas engine available in a truck today, and they are pretty easy on oil. Enjoy your truck!

Hey hemi4452 I hope I'm not coming off strong or anything but I don't know how to perceive your post if it was a compliment or basically meaning I'm screwed. But i like to ask you guys because you all have experience I'm honestly considering taking it back to the dealer with this issue. So if you think I would have troubles could you please clarify I appreciate your response. Thank you

Your truck uses conventional oil not synthetic. I had a reliable mechanic shop look it up for mine. It also does not have platinum plugs, one reason why they recommend changing them every 30K miles. They have copper plugs OEM

You're partially correct.

The upper bank is copper,
Lower bank is Platinum or iridium (can't remember which). In any case the interval on the bottom bank is much longer than the upper.

To the op: 5W30 isn't going to hurt anything. If you're really worried about it, you can just dump the current oil and fill it back up with a full synthetic 5w-20. If they just changed it you could probably forget about changing the filter. I would because they are $7.00 even for a MOPAR one from dodge.

You can mix synthetics and conventional, you can even mix grades to an extent.

You have no worries, you can use conventional oil or synthetics, or a blend which uses both oils like Castrol syntec blend. This is what i use. 5W-20 weight is the weight to use. Since 5w-30 was used NO WORRIES, you drained it and refilled it with correct weight, you are good to go. Welcome to the RAM Truck and enjoy this Forum, lots of great info and lots of cool guys. You purchased a really AWSOME truck. MOPAR and RAM for life.

WTF does this even mean?? Engines require certain oil weights, not types. It usually doesn't matter whether its synthetic or conventional unless the manufacturer specifies synthetic. You can mix full synthetic, conventional, and synthetic blend together without a problem too. If an engine can use conventional, it can use synthetic. Blending weights can cause problems.

Ram doesn't specify synthetic, blend, or conventional for the Hemi. As long as its 5W-20 its perfectly fine.

My 2013 5.7 plugs are due to be changed in 2000 miles. I'm considering replacing with all Iridium plugs. Read a post stating upper and lower banks used different plugs. Any cons beside price for installing all iridium?
