Default Scream from transmission?

Hi All,

Got 5k miles on my '13 Outdoorsman 5.7 w/6 speed.

I first noticed this when towing a 2,000lb boat. Under 75% or better throttle accelerating near the top of the gear I heard a a brief little scream from under the truck. It was over as quick as it started....I've never heard anything like it--some higher pitched noise probably metallic but isn't that clear.

I heard it again the other day in similar circumstances, then again a few days ago with no trailer. Accelerating from a stop onto the highway...

Any ideas? I'm stumped. I am hoping to be able to recreate it on demand before I approach the dealer...

Does this happen in one particular gear (like always on the 2-3 upshift), or does it happen during multiple shifts? If it happens on multiple shifts (but always at the same engine speed range), then I'd suspect it's something engine- or engine accessory-related. Sometimes you might have a metal line (A/C line, cooler line, etc.) that resonates at a certain engine RPM, so you get a brief "ring" when the engine passes through that speed. Or maybe a heat shield or some other piece of sheet metal, likewise resonating at a certain engine speed. Or maybe an accessory drive belt (fan belt, serpentine belt) that resonates / shakes at a certain engine speed, causing it to briefly touch some nearby sheet metal piece. Any loose belts?

Haven't had much luck recreating it but it faintly made the noise today at the top of second gear...it may be specific to the gear...

In either case I'll check for anything loose or odd. If I can at least recreate it for the techs that would be ideal

Thanks!

You say it sounds like it is coming from the top end of a gear.. so you are higher up in the RPM band. Belt or accessory I wonder?

If you think it is the transmission doing something funky I wonder if anything would show in the fluid at this point. Check the stick never hurts.
