Default 4 cylinder mode at idle

I can tell that now that the truck has built a "matrix" around my typical drive cycles (trips), it will idle on 4, and tip-in on 4 cylinders.

At 1248 miles with 95% being at speeds less than 45 mph, the average MPG is 16. The truck is a Laramie 8 speed 3.91 Crew 6.4"

I have a 6 speed but I cannot tell at idle that it is on 4 cyclinders. I can tell when driving steady on flat ground when it goes to 4 but not at idle. I have almost 5000 miles and it shows an average speed of 32 mph and an average mpg of 17.2. These are just short trips 35-45 mph with a little 55 mph but no highway.

With the same usage with my 1999 Dakota with the 3.9 Magnum V6 which was a dog in power I was only getting 14 mpg so I am pretty dang impressed with the HEMI!

I thught the 8 speed would be even better?

On my dash, the ECO icon will come on when in 4cyl mode.

All the ECO light means is that you are operating at the most economical way. It does not mean that it is in 4 cylinder mode. My MDS is shut off and the EC0 comes on quite a bit if there are no hills or am pulling a load.

This is correct, and I'm pretty sure it can't go into 4 cyl mode under like 20mph or something.

I am pretty sure our trucks idle on all 8 cylinders.

According to Chrysler, MDS uses all eight cylinders in idle and will not drop to four till you reach above 35 mph. MDS will not activate until the engine has come up to operating temperature also.

The Eco mode, and Fuel Saver on the early '09's, only indicate you are operating in a fuel efficient manner, it does not always indicate it is in 4 cylinder mode.

I find it difficult to tell when mine is only using 4 cylinders.

The best indicator for me is the sound of the exhaust on my single exhaust Tradesman, my dual exhaust Express is less noticeable, maybe because it exits out the rear?

my MDS shuts off at 10mph when decelerating, and it comes on while the engine is still warming up. My muffler allows me to hear when when MDS engages and disengages .... it sounds like a helicopter under water!
