Default 1st oil change....what a debacle

I had some free time today so I decided to change my oil for the first time today. My truck has 4100 miles on it. I had planned to wait until 5k but I figured what the hell.

I had already searched the forums so I knew there was potiential for a filter problem. Anyway, off to Advance I go. I asked the guy I usually deal with to look up the filter for a 2013. He tells me he knows that its Blah blah. I ask him to check it anyway. He checks it in the computer and says OH! they changed it. I use the purolator pureone filter most of the time. He tells me its PL24651.

I get home and as some have said the filter looks different. I think well the gaskets line up so it shouldn`t be a problem. Well I remove the old filter and the new one will not fit in between the steering rack , trans cooling lines and motor mount. The new filter is too wide.

I head back to the store with factory filter. The guy cross references the number on the factory filter and it`s a PL12222 which is the same filter my wifes Patriot used when we had it.

meanwhile back at the ranch...
I drain the oil and put the correct filter on.

I think they changed the filter because of the electric power steering, the bigger filter won`t fit. My truck is an Express QC 2WD 6 speed.

In the end it all worked out. Luckily my friend stopped by and was able to give me a ride back to the store.

Love my truck but I`ve never seen anything like this and I have been changing my own oil for 20 some years.

Thanks for sharing your experience and glad it worked out for you. This makes me want to crawl under a 2013 Hemi and take some pics of just how much tighter it is now that the electric power steering unit is utilized. Or hey! Can you give us some pics? Great for comparison!

All part of becoming intimate with and knowing your new ride. Glad it ended well for you.

The electric power steering is awesome. I'm glad my RAM has it. I know some like to change their oil themselves. But this is an example why I let the dealer do it. I get the first 2 free and then its just $19 for as long as I own it.

This is why I do it myself. I don't trust some parts changer to do it.
The last time I took a new car to the dealer for an oil change they over filled it by a quart. They didn't know about the TSB that the dipstick read incorrectly.

Good to know. I almost picked up a PureOne with the same part number the other day because it was on sale, but the book only had parts listed for 2012 and earlier. Glad I know 2013s take a different filter before I even tried changing my oil (only at 2200 miles right now).

Napa shows 2 filters. 1 is labeled large & is the same as 2012 the other is labeled small. Large Napa gold 7899 or Small Napa Gold 7060. The 7060 also fits many GM vehicles 2006 & newer.

LOL at "becoming intimate" w/ your truck. Every time my buddies dad drives by my house and sees me constantly washing & shining mine, he yells: "Why don't you just have sex with the damn thing"!!

You need to change dealers. My dealers service dept are very knowledgeable. I went out back to the services bays and introduced myself to them. They were great and gave me information on my new RAM. Ive had it back for some issues and they worked with me and rectified them with no problems. I also met the owner and his son who is the general manager. Not all dealers are bad and over priced.
