Default How to buy a Dodeg/Ram or any truck

Okay you want a new truck. Hopefully these tips will help you in your search and purchase.

First, never buy what you don't want. Nothing worse that buying something you know you won't like. But you do it anyways just because it is a new truck. It is easy to get sucked up into the nice new shiny truck. Part of the game. Today trying to save a few bucks on options does not work. The personal add ons you put on are only good to you. Resale won't help as the warranty is only good to you and gone when you sell it, and frankly most buyers want factory installed options.

Take the truck on a long drive. Try everything. Sun roof, radio, pair the phone, kick the tires, look under the truck. If you don't know how to work something, ask the sales guy. If he does not know he will get someone. If no one knows then you know what level of service your going to get at that dealership. Reset the mileage indicator and see what it does. The heck with the EPA paper. You want to know what that truck will do.

Try every accessory there is on it. Know what works and what does not. This will tell you about the PDI process and assembly.

When the sales guy gives you the deal paper and wants you to commit to buying and hands you a note commitment so he can send you back to F&I, stop and ask what all the add ons cost each and interest rate over what length of time. Do not go to F&I without that information. Remember this is the only time you are going to get the attention you want. Find out if the extended warranty you are thinking about is factory or third party. Ask how long it takes to get a refund if you change your mind on all the add ins over the weekend. Like when the check will be in your mailbox. Tells you about the office staff process.

The obvious point here is the sales tactic to get you too embarrassed to ask questions so you look dumb. Forget that and ask away. You will get more respect if you do. You will probably get a better deal as they know you obviously know what to ask. Do not buy into the intimidation scene.

Ask if any accessories you are thinking about will be done at the dealership or sent out. You may find it may be installed in a place you know does bad work or has no service.

Above all be kind. There is nothing personal going on. You want to get the best deal for you, and so does the dealer. However you have the power. You owe the dealer nothing. You do not have to buy anything. Pick a dealer you are willing to spend the time with as buying can be a lengthy process. Again part of the game. Make it where you will sign anything as your just tired. If you find yourself tired or overwhelmed, take a break. Go home, relax, talk with whoever and come back on your terms. You will make better decisions.

Buying a truck is not hard, and you have control. You want to go home and feel as if you got your monies worth and will be happy with what you purchased.

I am sure there are others who can input more suggestions, but these are mine after 50 years of car buying. They have served me well.

Solid advice!
If I could add a few things that work for me.
First - find out if they have the car you want on the lot. (go online... drop by... call and ask)
second- I always call the dealership first and ask for the names of the top two sales people on the leader board. If they hesitate I politely suggest I can call someone else. They always tell me. (The top two people in sales have great incentives to remain at the top- they really want to stay there)
When I arrive I only deal with one of them.
First question I ask is... may I see the dealer invoice and all current rebates.
They can sell you a car for much less than they paid for it. They really can.

The sales people at the top rarely are concerned with commission - They want the prizes and bonuses associated with monthly quotas.

Maybe you can give these ideas a try on your next purchase.

Full disclosure.... I have never special ordered a vehicle because all of my recommendations fall flat with a special order :-(
