Default Ford screwed me. Looking at RAM now... Info?

OK, so in April of this year, I bought a brand new 2013 Ford F-150 FX4 Super Crew, Ecoboost. I was aware of their being an issue on the 2011 and 2012 models, where you would be driving down the road (in humid or rainy conditions), hit the accelerator, and the truck would drop down in gears, lose power, check engine light, and start shaking violently. Well, I couldn't find any info on it happening on the 2013 model, and thinking that Ford would have it fixed by the 3rd year, I bought one. Well, I thought wrong. I had the problem at 5,100 miles and it nearly got me in a head-on collision. I take it to my local Ford dealership, they supposedly fix it and I get it back. Happened again at 9,550 miles and 9,850 miles (same trip). Come to find out, this is a huge issue and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has hundreds of complaints exactly like mine. As of right now, my truck has been in the dealers shop for the past 3 days. They are unable to "come up with anything" and have to consult a Ford engineer over the phone. If that doesn't work, the engineer has to fly down and take a look at my truck. As you can imagine, I'm pissed. This is a huge safety concern, and I'm basically done with the truck, and done with Ford. I'm taking the necessary steps in doing whatever it takes to get my money back (and hopefully get Ford to step up and do something about their issue, for the sake of other EcoBoost owners).

I'm looking pretty hard at the V6 2014 RAM 1500. I'm thinking about either an Outdoorsman, Laramie, or Larami Longhorn. I test drove a longhorn yesterday (V8 though), and loved it. All kinds of cool features, and I just can't get over the kickass Ram boxes (gotta have those). Are there any major faults or downfalls that are common on the 1500's that I need to be aware of? I've heard some bad things about the transmission, but I can't seem to find a lot facts on that. I just don't want to end up in my current situation again!

I have a 2013 1500 and love it. Haven't heard of any major issues other than some people's trucks have some weird paint defects from the factory.

I don't believe you can get the V6 in the higher trim models like the Laramie or Longhorn.... I think it's just SLT and lower models. That's something you might want to look into.

As far as issues go there's not much to comment on the 2014 Ram's as they are just starting to hit dealer lots and customers. Not too many people have posted reviews yet. From what I've read no one is having problems though.

The main thing to look out for is the gear ratio... last year quite a few people were getting their trucks delivered with the wrong gears because of a material shortage. The only other issue I can think of with the newer Ram's is the 8.4an radio.... again a few people have had issues with those but it seems to pretty much be resolved by now. Other than that they are great trucks! You won't be disappointed.

Dang, looks like you're right. V6 isn't available in those trims. I think the V6 EcoDiesel was available in the Laramie, but that's not what I want. I guess I'm wanting the Outdoorsman, just wish I could get it a little more fancy. I'm looking a lot at the fuel economy, coming from an ecoboost, I was getting pretty good gas mileage and having around 365 HP. Man, I was really liking the real wood and how nice the interior was in that Longhorn! I just can't get over how nice it was...

The 8 speed was a late 2013 introduction but I have not heard of any problems with it and the trucks I drove with it worked great, better than the GM 6 speed for sure. Anyway there is no real history on how these will hold up.

If you get the Hemi be aware that you can't use gas with more than 10% ethanol. There is a push for a national mandate for 15% ethanol and I'm not sure what would happen then. You could void the engine warranty I suppose by burning e15. Also, the Hemi is supposed to run on 89 octane but a lot of people report it runs fine on 87.

For 2014 Ram is using a new somewhat controversial AC refrigerant. It will be some time before regular AC shops are able to service it. If something goes wrong with the AC just after the 3 year warranty you could be stuck with an expensive dealer only repair.

I'm going to order either a 2014 Silverado or a Ram. The 2014 Silverado is much improved over the 2013. I actually tried twice to buy a 2013 Ram a few weeks ago and after selling me the truck the dealer later found it was sold to someone else (both trucks were at a different dealer).

I really like the Ram but the new Silverado is pretty nice too. I've always been a Chrysler guy at heart and have a old Charger but I've mostly owned older GM trucks as daily drivers.

What kind of mileage were you getting in the Ecoboost? These new hemis are getting fairly good mileage as well, especially if you drive it nice. I wouldn't necessarily rule that option out yet.

Take a look at the Laramie Limited trim level as well. It's even a step above the Longhorn IMO as it's all black and a lot more classy.

Keep hoping about getting your money back. That is about as far as it will go.
Buy a Ram and enjoy it.

All of this happened to me with my 2012 lariat Ecoboost. They never did fix it. It was in the shop for over 40 days in the first year. I sued and won. the best I ever got mpg wise on my Ecoboost was 17.3mpg. with 3.55 rear end. I have test drove the laramies with the 5.7l a lot and trip I take on test drives I would average right at 20.5mpg.

So I ordered a Laramie the other day. Hopefully dodge doesn't disappoint like Ford did.

The only real issue that I could see being carried over from 2013 to the 14 Ram is the radio thing. There are a lot of complaints of radio issues here on this site but compared to how many were produced at large... that is very few.

I don't think Ram really had any MAJOR hiccups minus the rear axle ratio's being incorrect on window stickers in 2013.

If it were me I would buy the Longhorn with the Hemi/8 Speed and carry on. You will NEVER love the 2 MPG you get more with the V6 over all of the options and luxury you get with the higher trims. Leather, passive keyless entry, push button start, heated seats/steering wheel and cooled seats. The list goes on for creatures comforts. I honestly could care less about MPG's at that point.

You are buying a truck.. it won't get great MPG's but you certainly aren't getting bad MPG's. My 2001 Ram got bad MPG's.

Just for the record I am driving a 2009 Ram with 70k on the clock.. the first of it's model year. It has been flawless for me. These newer Ram's, in my opinion, are much better built and more reliable.

Do yourself a favor and buy the nice loaded Ram and be happy.
