Default Registration for 3500

I'm looking to maybe trade my 2012 1500 for a 2005 single wheel 3500 cummins.. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about registration and the yellow tag.. I've heard if its not commercial I don't need the yellow sticker but some tell me I would need it no matter what cuz the truck is heavy duty.. I don't wanna spend $500 a year and a yearly inspection on this beast for no reason.. Thanks

Heres what I can tell you that I know.

Being a 3500, you dont have a choice, your getting a commercial sticker with it, its just too big of a truck from factory to not have it. But it's not 500$ a year, it's only like 80$ a year for it, so its not that bad.

Now, I have a 05' 2500 HD Cummins, and I'm not registered as a commercial truck, the 2500's leave you the opportunity to register as either non-commercial or commercial. I don't know if that will change how you look at wanting to upgrade. Because you could always throw extra leafs, or airbags in the rear if your looking to tow something heavier.

I don't think my neighbors 3500 2012 cummins has a commercial sticker as he uses it to tow his fifth wheel camper. But don't know for sure.

I find a lot of people don't put them on, even if they have it. because if its on, you need to pull into a weigh station right? and WTF wants to do that lol

You don't have to have the sticker on your 3500 if you're using it for personal use and you're not running a high enough GVWR to require it (unless your laws are different in Ontario than BC).

My truck is run for my own personal use and my GVWR is not bumped way up to tow lots of weight so I don't pay anything extra. If I need to bump up my GVWR way up to tow a big trailer for an extended period of time then I need to have the truck inspected but that's it.
Now my Uncle who also has a 3500 uses it to pull is 36ft enclosed trailer with all his trade show equipment in it for his business. When he does that he obviously needs to up his GVWR way up to accommodate the trailer which means he's getting an inspection. But because he is using the truck for company use, it becomes a commercial truck. So he has to pull in to all weight scales, run a log book, etc. Exactly what a semi-truck driver has to do.

Another thing to remember (that I think a lot of heavy duty truck guys don't know) is your standard license only allows you to pull 4600kg (10,141lbs). So if you plan on pulling more than that you need to go in and get your license upgraded. In BC I know there's a heavy trailer license you can get otherwise you can move up in classes altogether to get around it.

Ya, thats about the same out here as well for drivers lic and what you can tow...but I don't know of many friends of mine, including my landscape boss who has gone and bumped up his lic for the heavier load he has with his camping trailer lol.
