Anyone here have trouble getting an out the door price from dealerships? Everything is lightning fast until I try to get some solid numbers emailed to me and then it's like pulling teeth. The one guy today tried getting me to fill out a credit application on his site and get a security deposit check written while I was still asking for numbers on the truck. The thing that gets me is, they advertise a price on their site. Granted not everyone qualifies for all those rebates, but someone does. So they could sell the truck at the "Online OMG" price or whatever they want to name it to a qualified person. Why not give me the numbers and let’s talk? This has happened with 4 different dealerships so far. I am ready to buy. You have a sale right here waving at you. Just let me see your out the door price and we can work it out from there.

Your going to have to pick one, go in and play ball with them. IMOP they are all game players one way or another. Have all your ammo with you when you go and don't be afraid to spend a lot of time. They use time to there advantage thinking most get agrivated and cave in to what they want.
I had a dealer advertising a CC Bighorn for 10,000 of of msrp of 49,000 so 39,000. My trade in was worth 8,500 tops. I figured if I could get the truck for 40,000 and at least 7,000 for my trade, I would do the deal. 33,000 plus tax and title, or I would walk.
Well of course once you get there I did not qualify for the 10k off, but did get 9k off. Next they started at 4k for my trade in and took a couple hours to get it up to 6k. Told them I was going out to eat and when I came back we would continue. This is what they don't like , anyone leaving, so I did. Came back told them I would do the deal at 7k for my truck or I was walking and would try somewhere else. They came up to 7k, did the deal and was on my way.

I have the same frustration getting dealers to call me back. It's a $45,000 truck! Seriously, you don't want to send me an email with it priced out? Granted I know they're only making $1-2k or so on the sale but come on! Call me back.
At this point, I'm waiting to see what the January incentives are and then I'll go in BUT I'll do everything I can to make sure I'm speaking with the Fleet/Internet manager and not a regular sales guy.

Sticker Price

1500 express quad cab 4x4-base price 32,425

cust pkg 25C
  • popular equip group 40/20/40 bench cloth 535
  • posi rear 325
  • u connect 5.0, Sirius 1 year 465
  • 20"x9.0 alum chrome clad 575
  • class IV hitch 335
  • destination 1195
TOTAL 37,665

Actual cash price (incl VA sales tax) 37,318
general fees 563
ext service contract-takes it to 7yr/100K 2,492
consumer rebate (2,500)

TOTAL (not including trade and downpay) 37,873

Probably got screwed as I only negotiated interest rate(2.5%), and trade in. I went in without doing my homework beforehand but kind of wanted to replace my 99 ram sport before 2014, for biz tax purposes. When I asked if she had a black quad cab 4x4 with nice wheels and she drove up in front of showroom, I knew she was going home with me (the truck, that is ).

Driven it on a 500 mile trip and now have 1K on her and love it.

DO NOT WALK IN THE DEALERSHIP! DO NOT CALL THEM! Yes I shouted I'm in the process of negotiations as we speak. I actually began them late yesterday afternoon and into today. In my experience, the ONLY reason I walk onto a dealer lot is to test drive, see colors with my own eyes (brochures and computer monitors can't tell you how your eye will perceive the color's hue, etc.) and then to pick up my vehicle.

First thing I do is my homework. I research the truck in this case and decide what options I want. Then I visit Truecar, USAA's Car Buying Website and NADA to find the invoice and applicable rebates. Now I search for my truck through Ram's Inventory search (you can search the entire country by picking strategic zip codes since each one will search a 1000 mile radius if you select the 200+ mile search option). If I find a truck I want, I e-mail the dealer. If more than one has what I want I e-mail them all. If I'm ordering, I e-mail every dealer within a 50 mile radius of my house (10 at the moment).

I will use my current situation as the example. I have to order because there is not ONE SINGLE truck in the entire US on a lot that fits my needs (I'm picky I know but for $45K plus I get to be). I e-mailed all 10 through their respective websites and told them I was ready to order today, listed my specs and ext and int colors. I told them I've already searched the entire country and I have to order. I also tell them that I want their best price and give them the essentials (telling them I'm a USAA member with the $1000 certificate) for determining rebate eligibility. I also give them my zipcode so they can do a TDM search. I inform them I'm sending the exact same e-mail to the other 9 area dealers and that the best price/deal gets my business. I also tell them that I do not conduct my business over the phone and that once I have chosen the dealer whom I'm going to purchase my truck from I'll call and arrange the down payment. In order to contact some dealers through their website they require a phone number so I put my area code and then all 5s so it will send the request.

Believe it or not, 8 out of 10 of the dealers responded and one of them isn't open today (open on Sunday). This has worked for me for my last several car purchases. At this point, I have one dealer offering me Invoice and $1399 of the $1648 holdback with a full tank of gas at delivery. Another dealer flat out told me he will beat the lowest deal I get by $500. Now I have all of this in writing so the likelihood they will recant is small. I've never had that happen before. The dealer that only wanted to keep $249 of his holdback even told me that I didn't need to come in to order and that I could call him and he'd place it and take my deposit. I also requested that they tell me what their required deposits were and this guy told me the standard is $500 but told me whatever I could do would be fine.

I have never spent more than 30-60min in a dealership when I went to pick up my vehicle because everything is already negotiated. When you do it this way you TYPICALLY get the responses from the Fleet/Internet Manager vs. a regular salesman but it depends on the dealership. After I get the last 1 or 2 offers tomorrow, I will look at the best ones (usually 2-3) and go from there. Save yourselves time and DO NOT go into the dealer because that is EXACTLY what they want you to do. They then make you wait and play a control game...doesn't work with me and they know that up front. I want to see you guys/girls all get great deals without wasting your time. If you need any help, I would be happy to assist. Many of my friends and all my family members have me handle their car purchases (free of charge of course...lol).

BTW--to show the success of this method for my current negotiation here are my offers in order from best to least without even talking to them or setting foot in their dealerships:

Dealer 1) $500 below best offer I get (currently all holdback - $251) + gas
Dealer 2) Invoice - $1399 of $1648 holdback plus tank of gas
Dealer 3) Invoice - $848.05 of $1648 holdback
Dealer 4) Invoice - $824 of $1648 holdback
Dealer 5) Invoice - $500 of $1648 holdback
Dealer 6) Invoice
Dealer 7) Invoice
Dealer 8) $500 over Invoice
Dealer 9) Closed today should respond tomorrow
Dealer 10) No reply

That's great if you're in a large city. I have 3 dealers within 50 miles of me. 1 of them responded and then fell off the face of the Earth as soon as I told them I wanted to order a vehicle. I would not give them my phone number. They stopped responding after I sent them an email asking them to provide their number and I would call them. The other would not come off of FFP pricing (1% below invoice) and I would end up having to pay an extra 2% in county tax if I go through that dealer. The third one is known for being remarkably unreasonable so I have not contacted them yet.
The dealers don't really have competition around here and they know it. We'll see what happens next week once I know what the January incentives will be.

I went to school in C-Springs at the Academy so I lived there for four years. Where in CO are you? I understand you may have only three within 50 miles but expand your search. I know there are tons in Denver. CO isn't that big compared to TX and I would drive a few hours if it meant saving thousands to pick up my truck. If you've already decided you have to order because nobody has a truck you want on the lot like me, then just contact the big city guys. You can place an order over e-mail or on the phone and make your deposit.
