That's what I mean...we're all trying to help each other but posts like that are useless for those trying to negotiate deals. Please see the thread I created which levels the playing field (Price Paid True Comparisons thread).

I am a Vet using the USAA car buying service and before I decided on the ecodiesel I was shopping around and found I needed to order what I wanted anyway because the dealers around here (Columbus GA) could not locate what I wanted. Even talking with them they wouldn't go near USAA pricing which is crazy since this is a military town, so I will need to hit Atlanta area dealers.

So based on USAA the Total MSRP would be 58,580 for what I want.
49,105 base
+8280 in options
+1195 Destination fee

Estimated Dealer according to USAA:
43,019 Base
+7041 options
+1195 destination
-4,000 incentives (500 military, 2500 cash allowance started today, 1000 USAA)
47225 total

I mean that is 11,325 off MSRP.

Given what I have read here should I be trying to get some more money off this, like part of the holdback which I guess would be around another $800 for half? Is that even possible when you need to order what you want?

Thanks again, this thread has helped me out a lot. This is going to be my present to myself when the VA decides to finally decides to finish the rest of my disability ratings so I am going to treat myself good on this.
You should definitely try to get AT LEAST half of the holdback especially since you are ordering. BTW, you cannot combine the $500 military and the $1000 USAA so as a military person the USAA is really an extra $500 since we can't combine. You can read the fine print on the USAA Car Buying service site or the Ram site on the $500 Military T&Cs.

I also think you're misquoting the USAA price. The USAA price they estimate the dealer will sell it at (before you release your info and you recieve your guaranteed pricing certificate which is what you give to the dealer you choose to net you the $1000 rebate) INCLUDES the rebates you qualify for so you're taking the rebates off again.

Instead of focusing on rebates (you'll get those NO MATTER where you buy from), just focus on the actual deal relative to Invoice. You should shoot for invoice, minus half the holdback at least. I'm already at invoice minus all the holdback plus another $251 and am still in the final phases of negotiations between two dealers (started with 10). Good luck!

Thanks for the info, so if I am going to have them order a truck will they take what I want and produce an invoice that we can negotiate off of before the order goes in? Just wondering how I would figure invoice at the dealer before the truck technically exists

Sully it's very easy to get. Just go to NADA.com and build your truck. It will give the MSRP and Invoice of that specific truck you build. After that, subtract destination ($1195) from MSRP and multiply by 0.03 to get holdback. Shoot for invoice minus at least half holdback. You can get more sometimes.

2014 1500 CC Sport 5.7L. All interior bells & whistles + sport 'performance' hood. MSRP 44315, paid slightly under 37 plus an '11 Jeep Wrangler trade (23K) + an '03 Silverado SS trade (10K). Out the door for less than 5k, can't complain.

Default Looking for a little help ...

I've been reading this forum for the past couple of weeks as I'm going to be replacing my truck this year. I've heard a lot of great things about the Ram trucks as of late so I'm trying to get an idea of what pricing should be. I saw another thread that talked about a dealer showing bottom line pricing on their website so I took a look. The prices did look pretty good so I'm trying to wrap my head around pricing. One of the trucks listed has an MSRP of $55,610. I went to NADA and came up with a cost of $50,739. To figure the hold back I subtracted the destination fee of $1,195 and got $49,544. 3% of that ends up being $1,486.32. Cost less 100% holdback ends up $50,739 - $1,483.32=$49,252.68. The bottom line price on the website is $44,125 which is $5127.68 less than $49,252.68. When I look at the current incentives I see $3,000 on this model of Ram. Where is the additional $2,127.68 ($5,127.68-$3,000.00) coming from?

I'll help you out don't worry! First of all your Holdback calculation is off because you're using invoice and not MSRP. Ram calculates Holdback as (MSRP - Destination) * 0.03. In your example above then using your numbers it would be $55,610 - $1,195 = $54,415 * 0.03 = $1,632.45.

Your price for invoice - 100% of Holdback would therefore be $50,739 - $1,632.45 = $49,106.55 BEFORE any rebates.

Tricks dealers like that play (I consider them to be tricks) is to show a vehicle that includes EVERY SINGLE AVAILABLE REBATE possible which essentially NOBODY qualifies for. They always have fine print that says you may/may not qualify for all included incentives. Just ignore that advertisement completely. Focus your negotiations on invoice and get as much of the holdback as possible. I am currently at invoice minus all holdback and another $500 so some dealers will sell at a "loss" to push a unit for quantity bonuses from Chrysler. The STARTING point for negotiations is ALWAYS invoice and you go from there.
