Default K&N Filter

I purchased a K&N 63 Series Air Charger High-Flow Inttake Kit thinking it would help with the fuel consumption with added sound as a bonus. Right after it was installed I gained 2mpg and was thrilled but after a while it seems like my mpg has gone down, below what it was before.
I know nothing about these and was wondering if something is wrong with the filter. I don't want to return to my OEM as I love the sound from the K&N.
Advice?

Sounds like you're suffering from what's known as "happy sound syndrome". it's common among motorheads and often results in a heavy foot . if you're enjoying the sound as much as anyone else, it's expected, your MPG's will drop a little (I know mine did) just from hearing the motor growl. Check your filter to make sure it's secured, as there's been a few cases, myself included, where the filter can come off of the tube itself. my advice: you bought a ram...not a prius. try to ease up a smidge on acceleration, or bring your cruise speed down a few miles an hour if you're really concerned about it. hope this helps

Could be the switch to "winter gas" also if you live in an area where they do that. I noticed my mileage started going down a couple weeks ago when they started switching here in Kansas.

Um, I'll say it, it could be the K&N filter has no affect on your MPG. If you could gain 2 mpg by switching something like that, don't you think Ram would do it? I'm not a K&N hater but at normal throttle setting, its not going to help your MPG.

Winter blend = 14 MPG for me. And that's midgrade fuel, or whatever they feel like labeling stuff.

Thanks - had no idea there was such thing as "Winter blend".
Yeah, I do love the sound and that's why the K&N stays until I can figure out the next affordable "sound step" lol

Make your exhaust louder, then you won't hear the Wahaaaaaa of the free flowing air filter. You'll just hear the exhaust.
