Default Gas tank fell down

I have heard another 2009 dodge ram owner ask about this, I have been a mechanic for a dealer for 13 years, and by myself for another 25 years, I have not seen this happen to this new of a truck....happened to me this weekend, 09 --75,000 miles, extremly taken care of and washed and waxed, I was 3 hours from home , towing a trailer , after I filled up, drove about 1/4 of a mile heard scratching scraping, stopped looked under, saw the fuel tank hanging down, just above the road....... the rear strap was still there holding on, but where the front strap where it goes into the body of the truck there is a cut out, it it shape like a t slot, the strap on the end has a t shaped end ,one goes into the other, the slot on the trucks frame had its edges pulled out( rusted) and the strap came out when i filled it up from the weight, the strap was scratching against the drive shaft, no new strap will fix this, I found my rope I had and used my bottle jack and a block of wood to push it up ,then tied it off, (3 times around )that was a long trip home.......the metal on the bracket where the tank strap fits in the frame is VERY thin, it will have to be tig welded ,and have a plate made for it, I was lucky I know what sounds signify, and pulled over, check the bottom of your tank strap where it goes into the frame bracket, you can see it by just crawling under it with a flashlight, there is no huge amounts of rust under my truck, just these thin brackets holding on the straps have the rust

Pics or it didnt happen!

Sounds like a defect. Might want to contact chrysler and NHTSA and let them know. Give them the chance to make it right before you spend a bunch of money, out of warranty or not that is no-bueno.

What makes it sound even weirder is you are down south and don't deal with road salt. Dodge better take care of this one.

Wow thats very serious. I would crap my pants if that happened to me. I want to get a bottle jack now to put into my tool box now haha. Good thing you had it otherwise it would have been a long wait for a tow truck

I felt bad about posting , i love this truck, and was probably smiling as i drove it that day...it is really is a sweet truck, , i am asking something of the forum members here, could anybody with a 2010 or 2011, not a 2009, take a picture of the bottom of the bracket on the front strap where it goes into the frame, i know when you look at it, you will barely see the part where the strap goes in, but i am wanting to know if Dodge put a drain on the bottom of that bracket, it seems to me that it needs one, mine is closed off, and a perfect place for water to sit, i often wash the underneath of my truck at the non touching brushless carwash, so maybe the water just filled up in the bracket...I am reaching here...thank you in advance if anyone can help..I amgoing to take pictures of mine, but I have to remove all the rope first....

UPDATE !! Called Chrysler this morning, they were not impressed.......afer owning 3 Rams, and explaining all that happened, first question???...how much did the trailer weigh?...UHHHHHH! its an unloaded 16 foot lowboy, they told me that my warranty was expired, no kidding I think I knew that before I got on the phone, what I wanted was some help from a dealer or repair station , looks like i will be taking care of this my self, (with documentation), unless someone died, I wasnt given a chance...always made me mad, why it has to go to such extremes before ANY vehicle manufacturer will admit or take care of a problem BEFORE it gets worse, i am going to find the guy whos 09 did this same thing, and he told all on the forum to check theres , of course i didnt....

Thanks Butter, I am going to try the 5yr and 100,000 mile rust through warranty, it covers sheet metal, maybe it will cover this sheet metal. Its worth a shot . I am going to take mine down again and take pictures of it all. Seems kind of strange that the weld looks like it seals the whole bottom of the bracket so it will hold water.

WOW .. does that not look like mine, thank you for the picture, yours almost looks like a plate on top, I cant tell, mine is rounded at the bottom that is where all the metal is pulled through,if you look at yours at the bottom where the strap goes into that bracket , yours is clean and tight, mine has rust all along the bottom kind of in a line that made the strap pull through it, I will get the pictures , of mine ,I am on another forum and e-mailed Chrysler , but no help at all yet......
