Default Towing my Ram from NC to Texas

Hi all,

I am in the process of moving from NC to Central Texas. Unfortunately, I have to make this move happen myself without assistance and on as tight of a budget as possible. I am planning on towing my Ram 1500 behind a 22 foot Penske diesel truck using a tow dolly. Once I leave the mountains here, the trip will be very flat. Penske does not recommend that you tow anything more than 4300lbs on their tow dolly. I know my Ram weighs about 5600 with a hitch and everything. Uhaul and Penske do not have a trailer big enough to support the weight or length of my Ram.

I feel confident however that this big Penske truck would have no trouble pulling my ram. I am just concerned about the dolly itself since the vast majority of the weight is on the front. I wanted to see if anyone here has a recommendation about what to do. I can't afford to ship my truck either, and driving it won't be an option at the moment.

Thanks!

Is your RAM a 4x4? If so, I'm pretty sure you can put the transfer case in neutral and tow that way with a tow bar.

On the older trucks you had to turn the key on to unlock the steering wheel, but with the key in the dash instead of the column that is no longer necessary.

Check the manual for the proper procedure.

Good Luck!

First of all, let me be the first to welcome you to the great state of Texas!

I like that CrazyCanuck's idea of towing the vehicle on all fours with the transfer case in neutral.

the owners manual has a towing section, please check it out
flat towing, dolly towing, etc.
you definitely don't want to ruin a transmission or rear end

i would be looking for a company with trailers that have a double axle to handle the weight

Thanks for the replies all. I will look at somehow renting a big flat trailer that this damn truck can fit on. I would like to avoid towing it on all fours if possible. I could disconnect the driveshaft, etc. But, if I can trailer it. I will. I just need to find somebody willing to rent me one.

I'll check the manual again. The dolly rentals from Penske and Uhaul supposedly can't handle the weight or wheel/tire size.
