Default My towing impressions and issues

Hey everyone, I wanted to throw out a few things I've been running into while towing my trailer:
My trailer is a 2013 Nash 23d and has a weight of 5300ish with a full fresh water tank
My 10 years towing experience is mostly 1 ton diesel truck with 5th wheels and bumper pull and a few diesel pusher motorhomes with car/bike trailers, so I'm not a newb but I don't have all the experience in the world

1) It seems my truck will not shift out of 4th gear and stay in 5th. As you can see in the picture I had just passed someone getting on the freeway and I decided to try and stay at that speed to see if it would shift into 5th and maybe hold it........well if I let off the pedal it did and as I slowly rolled back into it right back to 4th it went. I've tried to get it to stay in 5th at speeds of 75 down to 55. This was going on even before I bought the Diablo tuner but I've tried on the stock 91 performance tune and the white lightning 91oct tune.
I know that going up a slight hill would answer my own question but to give you guys an indication of the terrain, I've driven the same road unloaded and the MDS is on 90% of the drive.

2) With the above issue, if I got 200 miles to a tank while towing I'd really be shocked. I know the MPG's fall into the toilet while towing but I'm totally stoked if I can sit at 10mpg's on a 55mph 2 lane highway. I really was hoping the upgrades in my sig would have helped some as well as having the 3.92 gears.

3) Other wise I really love my truck!!!!

I don't know if you utilized your Tow/Haul mode switch but judging by your speed and rpm's, I'd definitely say you were in 4th gear. What kind of incline or head wind were you facing? Did you ever consider on manually selecting 5th gear to show in your EVIC screen while towing? And I hate to say this to you but with your many years of towing, any speed above 60-65mph will diminish fuel economy by as much as 10% or more while towing. Which reminds me, remember the days where posted max speed limit while towing trailer was 55mph? The optimum rpm's should stay between 1800-2300rpms, give or take, to maximize towing efficiency and fuel economy. I think the speed of 75mph and your rpm's of 3000 were to blame on getting only 8-9mpg. I tow a 3000lb boat with 3.55's at 70mph @ 2000rpms and average 13's. But when I had my 2006 Titan 4x4 with 6" lift and 35" Nitto Muds, I only averaged 8mpg towing 6000lbs at 65mph.

Interesting remarks by the OP. My 2013 will hold 60-65 in 5th, flat road and no headwind towing my 32 foot trailer that weighs 6300 pounds empty at about 1900 rpms. if I have a slight hill or headwind it down shift to 4th for a long time. But I don't go faster than 60 or so the rpms in 4th are about 2300.

No head wind that I could tell and appeared to be flat. Yes I have tried the manual shift mode and I've tried both the tow/haul mode as well as normal. Yeah I know that towing at 75 will make my mpg's disappear and I was doing that speed, initially, to pass some jack ass who thought getting on the freeway at 40 was ok to merge into traffic. I held it there to see if I could get 5th and be high enough in the rpms that perhaps it would stay there. My normal towing speed is 55-65 on the freeway and highway and I never seem to see 5th gear

I'm not sure what your trailer looks like, but my guess is it cathes a lot of wind. Once you get up to speed the weight of the trailer doesn't mean as much as how much wind it catches. My guess is it won't hold 5th gear because the computer tells it 4th gear is better for the load your pulling.

My camper weighs 7420 lbs, it is 29'4" long an is a full 80" interior height trailer with approx 11'4" exterior height. I drop into 5th all the time and hold it even on slight inclines but I go 60-65 usually around 63. I have noticed that going any faster like 65-68 my truck will hold 4th and not drop to 5th. I can get 9-10 mpg and all I have is a 18" magnaflow. I do have an aux. Engine oil cooler but that doesn't help shifting just keeps the oil temp down. I also am assuming you are using tow haul.

Towing a 5000lb trailer I can barely hold 5th at all, but that was driving through the loping hill of Kentucky, and barely getting 9mpg @ 60mph. It's the gears, I don't care what people say, the 3.55's flat out suck at towing! I'm swapping to 4.56 and then I will be able to utilize the 400lbs of torque dodge provided me! No need for a diesel on towing less than 7000lbs, just swap them gears! The Engine and drivetrain performed excellent, except those pesky 3.55's...

2010 Laramie 3.55 gears - @ 110 Kph ( 70 mph) 1725 RPM 12 mpg no head wind - 2013 Radiance tall travel trailer 7200 Lbs max load
In a wind 9 - 10 Mpg @ 100 Kph ( 60mph ish) 2500 RPM same trailer. This is all in Tow Mode.
Hills ( med - large) will kill the mileage. I seem to get same mileage as a buddy with the 3.92"s in his 2008 1500. He however has a heavy foot so he may get better if he stayed off the pedal!!

my truck with 3.55s has the same problem...always in 4th. trailer is a dutchmen 261bhs, 6871lbs dry, around 7300 loaded. If I stay at 55 it will occasionally shift to 5, but doesnt stay ther long as I tow in the foothills and mountains all the time.

Well I'm leaving for my final fishing trip this weekend and as I get out of the canyons it opens up to a flat road with a 65mph speed limit so I'll try a few things
