Default another auto versus manual questin

I am a Manual transmission guy. I don't like the way auto's downshift on hills and when gently accelerating, it bothers me that some engineer has decided that any demand on the engine requires a downshift (why buy a diesel?). My wife's VW Jetta has a selectable auto transmission that won't downshift until engine RPM drops below a minimum (almost stall), or you stomp on the accelerator, in other words it stays locked into 6th gear even on the steepest hills. I'm looking at the 2 transmissions available to put behind the Cummins, the 6 speed manual with a final drive ratio of 0.74 and the AS69RC 6 speed auto with a final drive ratio of 0.63. That's a significant difference. My question to you owners of the AS69RC 6 speed auto is, when you select 6th gear does it stay in 6th until RPM's drop to almost stall or you stomp on the accelerator?

Thanks. I'm hoping to be a Ram truck owner very soon

Unfortunately I can't answer this question, but I am going to get this moved to the Cummins sub-section to where hopefully some cummins owners will be able to chime in and help you out.

Although I'm not a Cummins owner at this time I'm in a similar situation. For the most part I hate the way that the way autos function most of the time. I'm looking at picking up a manual to help get less parasitic drag and hopefully have a little better mileage and the fun of jamming gears big rig style. Finally the Cummins trucks all have 3.42 axles so (IMO) the auto doesn't feel near as powerful as it should even though it has a decent first gear (3.23). The first gear on the manual is significantly lower (5:94) and is going to feel like you can pull the devil outta hell even with 190lb ft. less torque.
