Default Bed Swap

Hi. I'm a newbie on this site, but not a newbie owner. Have 1994 1500 5.2 Ram reg cab long bed with a very expensive custom made work cap on the back installed years ago.
#1) I'm still running 40/50 psi oil pressure with 300287 miles on the clock. Engine never opened. Occasionally oil pressure goes to zero when real hot, and pull over and shut it down. Check the oil, wait a few minutes, add some if necessary, start up and good to go. Change oil(Castroil 20/50 High Mileage since 150K on clock) every 2500/3000, and goes down about 1/2-1 qt between changes.
Overheated the engine several times in first 175K, so suspect have blown head gasket(maybe both), as I also have to refill the bottle on occasion.
Now, I wanted to do a valve job way back when, but was told that with the mileage (175K at that time), if I open it I should also do a complete rebuild, as the rings are probably worn also. Smokes a little, not much.
I swear this engine will outlast me( I'm 71).
I think that the oil pump is getting clogged on occasion. Any comments?

#2) As I can see the end coming for my wheels, and wanting to keep the expensive work cap, is it possible to put a second gen bed on a third gen long bed chassis so that I can save it? (Manufacturer of cap said can't alter to fit third gen Dodge box)
Have seen some comments of the other way around, and resulting appearance, but not in this direction. Replacement cost for my cap would be 3.5K to 4K.

Appreciate any feedback on both issues.

thanks

I'm guessing you've got a little bit of sludge in there. Over 300K? Wow! Very impressive! Anyway, yeah, I'm thinking sludge. Try some Seafoam in the crank case about 100 miles before you change the oil next time. Maybe that will thin it out and clean it up some.

Not sure about the bed swap. The body lines are a little different and they won't match up. But I would suggest taking some measurements and see if it'll work. Or, drop a new motor in that very impressive beast. You got any pics that you can share with us?
