Default Remote Tailgate Release Install!

So, I decided since I was going in to do the remote tailgate lock, that I would also do a remote tailgate release. It turned out to be very easy to do. Our trucks are set up well for this mod. You need a way to actuate the remote release solenoids. I am installing a start button, GPS/GSM keyless system in my truck, so the trunk button on the remote will trigger the tailgate release. If you are leaving the factory remote access system in place, I don’t believe there would be any way to trigger it from the remote. The best bet would be to wire a push button in the cab to actuate the remote release solenoids.

First, buy two of the $8 generic door lock solenoids from ebay, or wherever you can get them. I tried it with one first, and one does not have enough torque to release the tailgate. Two of them work perfectly.

First step is to remove the cover on the tailgate, then remove the two factory actuator rods by releasing the clips and pulling up on the rods. Then, remove the two nuts that hold the latch assembly together.

Remove the latch assembly and drill a hole in each arm. Here is a pic of a hole drilled in the one arm. Drill a hole in the bottom arm in the same location.

Here is what it looks like with the clip installed and the new actuator rod installed.

Below is a pic with the two actuators and rods installed. Installing the actuators was easy, just drill 4 holes and use 4 screws to mount the actuators as shown. The actuators come with the rods, which you bend to make them the right length.

This pic shows the electrical wiring installed to the actuators.

I did this when I was installed the remote tailgate lock. The wiring for the remote tailgate lock can go under the factory wiring cap between the tail gate and truck box, underneath the factory rear view camera wire. The wire for the remote tailgate release cannot fit under there as well, so a new hole is drilled in the factory plastic cap:

The next pictures show the routing of the wiring under the truck. Since I did this at the same time as the remote lock actuator, I placed the two wires for the remote release solenoids in the cable loom for the remote lock actuator. There is enough room for 4 wires in the loom that comes with the Dodge remote lock kit. It takes a while to push 20ft of wire into the loom, but it is worth the time as it makes for a cleaner install. The wire routes as shown at the back of the truck, then follows the brake lines all the way to the engine bay. At the brake ABS solenoid in the engine bay, the remote lock actuator wires get routed to the fuse box in the engine bay. The remote tailgate release wires break out of the loom and go through the rubber seal that is on the driver’s side firewall, and are then routed under the dash.

This video shows the remote lock actuator operating:

Remote release with the tonneau cover down. You can see there is a little delay as the tailgate spring takes a bit to push the tailgate away from the tonneau gasket.

Let me know what you guys think! I think it is a convenient, cheap ($20 for the actuators and wire), and easy to do mod!

Nice MOD and great write-up. I like custom MODs that are different. Nice job.

My envy is high.

I have the tailgate assist and this just owns it. Now to speed up that delay....
