Default 2002 4.7L is slow to start - any ideas????

My 2002 truck with a 4.7 liter engine is now slow to start. It always starts, but it takes awhile. When I first bought it, it would start instantly. Now the engine cranks over for 15 seconds and then it gradually starts.

Any ideas???? Maybe a sensor goes bad on this engine?

No error codes in the computer.

I thought it could be fuel pressure, but turning the key to on to prime the pump (and/or off and on a couple of times before trying to start) and waiting a bit before cranking it over doesn't have any effect on it.

Any help would be appreciated...

Your best bet IMO would be to test compression, fuel pressure, then sensors.

What do you mean by "slow start"? Is it cranking slowly or a prolonged cranking time?

Anyways get your battery tested and we'll go from there.

Pretty sure he means it cranks normal speed but the engine doesn't fire right away.

Exactly - it cranks normal speed. Just that it doesn't start up in "one" second like most fuel injected engines. Otherwise it runs fine - seems to have plenty of power like normal. I had 2700 pounds (200 miles) in it this summer without an issue.

Definitely do a compression check. I had a dead cyllinder in mine and as it was going out, the time it took to actually start got longer and longer, then I started noticing a boom or clapping sound and lost a significant amount of power. Crappy part about these engines is that all the spark plugs run in a parallel circuit. So if one has any problems, it causes issues across all of them.
