Default Used vehicle purchase in your state (Taxes)

So whats it cost you tax and registration wise in your state to buy a used vehicle?

Here in NY 8% sales tax on purchase due at time of registration , then a two year registration based on weight,

My used 06 at 13,000 dollars purchase price = 1,240 dollars to the state in sales tax and about 225 to the County Dept of Motor Vehicle regie fees

betting NY is one of the worst states

I feel your pain. I used to live in Connecticut, where the sales tax was ~9%, then you had an additional "personal use tax" that was ~4%, and on top of that there was a registration fee. The fee was based on the type of vehicle... there were cars, trucks (which were restricted on some roads) and what they called "combination" (combo of truck and car) aka pick ups, vans, etc which had a registration fee almost as high as that of a commercial vehicle.

You had to pay the registration fee and personal use tax annually. It usually ended up costing close to ~$1K every year to get your vehicle registered.

Here in Louisiana it's not quite as bad. We pay either 8.X% or 9.25% dependent upon the Parrish that we live in, and then it makes a difference if we live within or outside city limits. Inside there is a slightly higher rate. 3/4 ton and heavier truck have what is known locally as a "B plate" which is a higher rate and I think it runs for only one year, everything else is two years, except on trailers you can get a "lifetime" plate where you only pay for the plate once. I think I just renewed the registration on my '11 Honda, and it cost me ~$50

I kinda figured Ct. would be pricey tax wise , and La. I thought would be a lot less than 8 or 9.25% always heard the southern states are the most reasonable, NY is ridiculous

Thanks for the reply

In Ontario Canada we have HST @ 13% then your registration fees. On top of that everything here costs more than in the States to start with.

Just another reason to run away from NY as fast as possible

It's complete BS to pay sales tax on a used vehicle. The tax was paid on it when it was bought new.

Just regular sales tax like anything else you buy. I believe our county is 6.5%, some are 6% and some are 7%. For the most parts it's 6-7% everywhere here(at least around me).

State of Oklahoma:
  • New Vehicle: 3.25% of the purchase price (or taxable value, if different)
  • Used Vehicle: $20.00 on the 1st $1500.00 of value + 3.25% of the remainder

Fortunately for many 100% disabled veterans as well as myself, there is no excise tax on new vehicles in Oklahoma. We are allowed to buy a new vehicle every 3 years without paying excise taxes.

Registering my new 2013 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie Longhorn cost $30 including tag. Every year from now on it will only be about $7 per year.

In Massachusetts its 6.25% sales tax if you have a trade the amount is deducted off the amount to be taxed. The cost for plates and title is $100

In Oregon the tax I had to pay was zero, and the two year registration for my '03 Ram 2500 was $80.
