Default Want to tow a RV Trailer. Can I make my 1500 into a 2500?

I have seen 3500 duallies with 5.7 hemis, so I know I have the engine for it.

Can I add springs or spring helpers to make my 1500 handle more like a 2500?

sub'd. I know that it can't really be done (at least not to add LEGAL capacity), but I want to see the responses.
how big is your TT that you want a 2500 to tow it? I read about some TT that are pretty hefty being towed with 1500's, so I am curious. Mine's 5900 lbs, so hardly 2500 territory, but I like to beef up any parts I can.

you can ADD stuff to your truck.. but you cant change the transfer case UNLESS you wanna fork over the cash for it... and IT depends on if its a Four wheel drive too...
You can add components to the truck to beef up the suspension but everything else will be expensive.

2wd, 5.7 hemi, 3.92 rear end with trac-loc. Auto trans.

Supposed to be able to tow 8600 lbs. The trailer we are looking at is around 7000 dry, with 1500 cargo capacity. Hitch weight around 900 lbs. So we will be right up to the max.

I figured if we could beef up the rear suspension a bit, it might make for a better ride.

So what could we add to beef up the suspension a bit?

There are things you can do to improve towing performance to a degree, but transforming it into a 2500, no. Part of what gives the greater towing capacity and the one you will be unable to overcome is the frame.

Exactly what Hermes1 said ^^

You can look at air bag kits for the rear suspension or stiffer springs. But no matter what you do your tow rating is still 8600 lbs. Nothing you do can change that. So if your trailer is heavier than that and you get pulled over or get into an accident you're going to run into some problems.

Also, while you have the 5.7 engine they are tuned the same in the 1500's as they are in the 2500/3500's. The HD trucks are tuned to have more bottom end torque to get everything moving. But that's not an overly big deal.

I have found leaf spring replacements that increase my rating from 1700 to 2200 lbs.

Direct replacement, for just around $100 a set.

You do not want to get caught overtowing. Get in accident or pulled over and they scale you out, there could be some serious fines. Especially if in an accident someone in another vehicle dies, because you had the knowledge that your truck was hauling overweight and you chose to make that decision, a lot of insurance companies also won't cover you as they believe this is your own fault and stupidity for driving an unsafe vehicle on the road and endangering others.

Make sure to also include yourself and every other person in the truck into the towing weight, and if you have a weight distribution hitch, you have to account for that because those things are heavy.

Several out there. I just googled Ram 1500 heavy duty leaf springs.

http://www.stengelbros.net/34-1451HD...SA_p_2482.html

More expensive but give good details of spring rates, length, etc.

Another for $119
