Default Anyone towing with a 2500HD, 5.7 and Automatic ?

I have a 13 Laramie 2500HD CC 4x4, with the Cummins and automatic.
I love the truck, it only has 3,000 miles on it.
BUT, it has been in the shop since last Friday. The CEL came on, and it started running crappy. The dealer has no idea what the code means, or how to fix it. Even the engineers have been zero help.

I really don't expect it to get fixed, and am going to start the buyback process next week, if the dealer isn't willing to work with me.

I had hoped to order a 14 with the Cummins, or possibly the 6.4, but have read that production will not start again until at least 11/11. If that is true, it would be probably the first of next year before I got a new truck.

I found an identical 2500 to mine except it has the 5.7. I have driven a 1500 with the 5.7, it was my first loaner. It ran fairly good.

So, is anyone using a HD 2500 5.7 with an automatic to tow with ?
I know it won't be the same as the Cummins, but am exploring all of my options in anticipation of them buying back the truck.
Any info would be greatly apreciated

I drove a couple mega cab 2500's before buying my cummins. They were nothing like driving a 1500. They felt terribly slow and I couldn't imagine buying one.

However I'm very intrigued with the 6.4 hemi. Really want to get behind the wheel of one. I don't need a cummins in any way but really only bought it because the 5.7 was so bad in the 2500. I would make sure you drove one before buying, and not just a quick drive.

Thanks KC. I would definitely want to spend a lot of time driving one before making a move.
I too am interested in the 6.4, but those are also on delay. If I am going to have to wait, I would stick with the Cummins.

I have been really happy with my 13 Cummins, until it decided to develop a chronic illness

I'm also curious about the 6.4 Hemi. $1,500 seems kind of steep for the modest boost in power (410 hp, 430 ft-lbs), but I haven't seen dyno charts so maybe the torque comes on strong at lower RPMs. Would definitely be nice to have something to fill the towing gap between the 5.7 and Cummins.

I have a 13 Laramie 2500HD 5.7. I love it. I traded in a 2010 f350 cc lb 6.4. I like the power and get better mileage the the 6.4. My ram sitting in My driveway weighs in at just over 8600lbs. (see My Pics) I have put 5000 miles on it in two months. half of which is back and forth to Our place up North in Mi. if I keep it under 70mph I float right around 14-16mpg. once I get up into the 80s the mpgs drop to 11-12. I have towed My 3 place open sled trailer up and back once so far and got around 10mpg. the trailer and whats on it weighed about 3000 pounds.

I agree. The dyno chart comparison between the 5.7 and 6.4 would be interesting to see. I was surprised there isn't more difference than there is between the two.
$1500 does seem steep for the small difference, but then again, it is a lot better than the almost $8,000 for the Cummins

That's the kind of info I'm looking for. Thanks. Our travel trailer weighs about about 6,000 fully loaded. My Cummins towed it like it wasn't even back there, but in all honesty, I didn't even check the mileage.
I would really miss the exhaust brake, if I end up going with a Hemi.

Before we towed the trailer up to our hunting camp, I had a problem with the trailer brakes, so I disconnected them. I went down a 6% grade that is about 2 miles long and has quite a few curves in it, and I maintained 50-52 mph and never touched the brakes

I own a 1500 with the hemi, 3.92 gears with 6spd, and tow a 7500 tt, I have a combined weight of 13,700. I didn't see what you planned on towing or how much weight. The 2500 should have a better cooling system for greater weight but doesn't really have a better gear ratio especially if looking at 8 spd. If your towing a low profile trailer that would also change a lot or if looking at 5th wheel trailer as the aerodynamics are just better. There are a lot of guys out there towing 10,000lbs with the 5.7 but I don't know how much I would like it especially if the truck itself weighed another 2000lbs or if in hilly conditions

I tow a 4,500 lb gooseneck 2 horse trailer. My horse weighs 1,200 and my wife's is @800. So we're around 7,000 loaded. I am very pleased with the towing performance of my 2500 Hemi Ram. We're getting @ 11.5 mpg towing. We only tow once or twice a month and so do not really need the diesel plus I prefer Hemi for everyday driving. This months Truck Trend had an article on the Power Wagon. It said that the 6.4 Hemi "...gets to the same torque level as the 5.7 1,000 rpm sooner". That would be perfect.

I tow a 14' enclosed trailer full of tools and materials daily for work usually around the 4500-5000lb mark. I've got the 5.7 in a 08 power wagon and I have to say I'm really pleased with it. I believe that 4:56 rear end really helps with getting that load moving. I know you're all talking newer models but just thought i'd throw my two cents in.

Don't even think about towing with the 5.7. I have a 2500 (Power Wagon) with the 5.7 and it barely pulls itself. No way I would consider pulling a trailer around with it especially if you are anything above sea level or in hilly or mountain terrain. Really regret not getting the Cummins. Not to mention the mpg and range of the vehicle is horrible. I can't believe anyone is getting 11.5 mpg towing. I barley get that with no load at all.

If you need a 3/4 ton and need to tow go diesel.
