Had the same question when I picked up my RamTruck 3500. After numerous attempts to get an answer, this is what I found out. Yes you do need the Ram Truck picture frame, if you intend to install a regular 5th wheel hitch. There are 3rd market items like utilizing the gooseneck to 5th wheel setup. I was reluctant to go that route, but others have. I was fortunate to find an available Ram picture frame and Mopar 5th wheel hitch.I drove 250 miles to pick it up, for it was not available anywhere near me or available for order( indefinite backorder at that time). I have since found out that the 5th wheel hitch sold by Mopar is a Curts 5th Wheel hitch, but you will still need the picture frame from Mopar. As far as I could find out there is no 5th wheel hitch that will connect directly to the factory installed pucks on your vehicle. See attached for more info.
