ok but these aren't big rigs, and 8 and 9 speeds are nothing new either as Merc, BMW and Audi have been using them for quite a while with great reliability. The only thing that suck about fancy transmissions is that gone are the days of being able to fix it yourself easily, and they cost an arm and a leg to repair. New technology means you can't go to anywhere other than a dealership to get a vehicle fixed because no one is trained to do it. They'll look at your car and be confused as hell, granted that's if you ever went to one of those.

So far, the problems have been software related. A complaint has been that the trans seems to "hunt" for the right gear at times. The algorithms take into account speed, engine RPM, throttle position, and probably a few other inputs to select the proper gear. Some folks said that they pulled out to pass, nailed-it, and the trans hesitated. Crappy feeling! Still, just software. I hope they have a line of code that looks for the SPEED at which the pedal is depressed (drive-by-wire), and use that to calculate the urgency of the shift.

Before I ordered my truck I test drove a new jeep cherokee trailhawk with the pentastar and the 9-speed. I did a lot of research on a new cherokee site as well. Most of what I found was that most people who had them so far had not experienced the tranny ever shifting into 9th gear and hardly ever into 8th

I would think that you would only be using the top end gears for freeway driving.

hell to me 6 is enough, especially on a Ram. they can strap all the gears they want on those little compact suv's and cars but leave the beastly Ram line alone. when you drive a truck, who honestly cares about gas mileage?! American Pride right here 👍

I somehow doubt the people who said they weren't ever in those gears. Have you ever felt that transmission shift, because you really don't hear or feel it shift it's very effortless and smooth.

You can see what gear you are in on the screen

Obviously you are not alone in your opinion but believe me there are plenty of people like me that do care what kind of mileage they get with their truck. For a long time I have wanted a truck that can be a combination of a daily driver and weekend toy. I think the Ram with the pentastar and new 8 speed tranny is finally what I have been waiting for. And if I may ask, what exactly does not caring about your gas mileage have to do with American Pride?
