They do improve mileage, but where you see the real benefit (for example in my ram) of these transmissions that have a lot of gears is in power availability. The 8 speed in the Ram adds gears down low for more power off the line, and some intermediate gears for more power availability regardless of your speed. It does a much beter job of keeping the Hemi in its power band, and gets rid of that "dead zone" the 5 and 6 speed had due to the close spacing of the 2nd and 2nd prime gear. I consider the new transmission to be a power upgrade more than anything else, but I'm certainly not going to complain about fuel savings if they come along with the increase in power availability.
