Question Towing

I am looking at a 1998 2500 V10 with 200,000 on it,and was wanting to know what kind of miles they are good for? I now have a 1996 2500 5.9 V8 and it will not handle my 16,000 LB 5th Wheel so will a V10 pull it ok?
Thanks Ed

With that kind of weight, I would look at a diesel. Should be a big difference in fuel economy numbers while towing and an overall better experience, Also, depending on your tongue weight, you may want to consider a dually.

Question towing

I would like to stay away from the diesel if possible.I drove the truck today and it is a 96 not a 98 but it seems to have plenty of power but I was told that you can not tow in overdrive with a dodge automatic,is this true?
Thanks Ed

I would not tow heavy loads in overdrive since OD is very weak. It's better to use a little more fuel towing in 3rd then to have to rebuild the transmission.

Since you don't want a diesel, you may also consider the 01-07 GM 2500 with the 8.1 big block engine. The transmission (Allison) will be much better than a 47re.

I wouldn't be afraid of using the truck. My truck is a 5 speed, which I prefer for towing, but i have pulled both gooseneck and bumper trailers several times with no problems.
