Default towing with a 1500, mistake?

Just purchased a 2103 1500 laramine with the 5.7 and 3.92 rear, rated to towed 9900 according to the dodge website and dealer. I plan on towing a 2011 jayco travel trailer that is 5300 lbs dry....probably 6300 with all our crap and I have the wife and two young kids to put in the truck. I had a Chevy Avalanche that was only rated to tow 7200 lbs and i was beating the crap out of the truck so along came the new ram. Towed this weekend for the first time with the ram and Im a bit surprised. Around town, it gets up and goes but I feel like on the highway its no better than the avalanche. Even in tow / haul mode the tranny shifts alot and actually stays in 4th most of the time at just under 3000 rpm and maybe 65mph. I felt like the hemi was screaming at me! Dont even ask about mpg!

Did i make a mistake? Should i have gone with a 2500 instead of a 1500?
I just dont want to beat the hell out of the new ride! Anyone know of some mods that might make towing a bit easier?

First question, did you break in you truck before towing with it?

When pulling that much weight that's just where your RPM is going to be on a gas engine because that's where the power is. That's pretty normal. A 2500 wouldn't be much different in that sense unless you went to a Cummins.

I tow a 29' Jayco with my 1500 (8 spd) no problem. The air suspension is fantastic for this as well. I pulled the same trailer with my 2005 1500 and although it was not as good as my 2013, it still handled it fairly well.

I have the 2013 Ram 1500 with the 8-speed Hemi and I tow a 21' travel trailer with mine.

Whilst I can't say I have problems getting speed out of it (142km with the trailer in tow), I will admit that I know it's back there.

I have read all sorts of people saying that they can't feel it, but I can't say the same? My truck feels heavy and act differently (as I suppose it should)?

I just figure that I am a noob to trailers and that's the reason why?

I'd be open to peoples comments on this topic too.

Honestly, no matter what truck you have I if you're pulling a trailer that big and heavy you're going to feel it. I have a 3500 Cummins and I was pulling a 28 ft enclosed trailer loaded up full of boxes and furniture and junk, so it wasn't overly heavy (I'd say no more than 6500 pounds) and I definitely knew it was back there. IMO every person who actually knows their truck will and should feel the difference when it's loaded up or towing compared to being unloaded. If you don't feel the difference when doubling the weight of your truck going down the road then you probably shouldn't be driving the truck.

Thanks Brandon,

I was always surprised with what I read from others and knew that something and to be up.

It still pulls fine, just feels heavy.

I can way in on this thread. I have a '13 5.7 6 speed 3.55 and I pulled my '13 Jayco 267 Bhs 5,300 lbs from south east Texas to Wisconsin (1,200 miles, truck had about 3,500 miles on it at the time). I had no problems at all except for pretty lousy fuel mileage (8.5-10) but it is what it is. The truck seems to have plenty of power for the load. I actually caught myself doing 70+ mph by accident and had to slow her back down to 60-65, to my comfort range. Pulling something like that it's best to have heavy duty stabilization and weight distribution hitch or the trailer will be all over the road and not help your nerves. One suggestion I can give, manually drop your transmission to 4th gear with the +/- selector. If you are on fairly flat roads, just let it sit there and eat. I think it's a lot easier on the truck not always searching for gears. Good power range between 55-70 mph.

First time for myself towing with the new truck on the highway yesterday... If I were to do a lot of highway towing, I would have definitely stayed with the 6.7 cummins. It was only an empty dump trailer 12'x6' but jesus 10mpg at 70 and the tranny just kept shifting to maintain speed (turned Trailer/ Tow off since 3k on the highway is ridiculous).. I was kinda shocked it did so poorly. Around town is no problem, which is where I do 95% of my towing but I couldn't imagine making a long highway trip towing with this truck.. 6 speed 3.92s

I have a 2013 6 speed 3:92 and i pull my 31" Salem Travel Trailer with no problems and i am 7700 lbs dry. Mind you yes it takes to get it moving but any vehicle will be that way when pulling that much weight.
