I just towed 10,000lbs in a dump trailer around town for 50 miles last weekend and was really impressed. It was pretty much light to light with a 45MPH speed limit so it was a lot of work for a truck. I towed 10,000lbs a few times with my ’04 Cummins and sure it got off the line a little better but didn’t really feel I was giving anything up with my ’13. Very, very impressed with this truck for a half ton.

Towing performance is all about expectations. Just because the truck ratings look good doesn't mean it will meet your performance expectations.

I've got a Ram HD w/Cummins. It tows 6000lbs like it's not even there. But I still have a performance issue. When not towing, off the line and for passing, it's a slug. But once it gets moving, it moves out! It feels like it's got major turbo lag. You don't notice this, unless you stomp the go pedal.

Personally, I was really surprised at the non-towing performance. I had a '04 Ram w/Cummins, and it kicked butt; off the line and all around! I expected my '14 Ram w/Cummins to perform better. Yes, it does do better when towing, but non-towing is terrible. From my understanding, it's because they use some "Torque Management" crap, so stomping on it doesn't destroy the rest of the driveline...

I find that my 2012 Cummins does absolutely great when not towing. Has tons of power and torque to pass anyone on the highway when I need to. Especially if you start putting your foot into it and build up some good boost. You'll fly by them in no time.

In town it definitely takes a little more fuel to get it moving. But the truck is also a couple thousand pounds heavier than most of the half tons out there. So that plays into it as well. Overall I enjoy driving my Cummins far more than my 4.7 in my 1500. Not sure how different a Hemi would be though but either way, no complaints about the Cummins from me....

I pull way, way too much than I should also... about 3 times a week on avg. My 2005 1500 pulled everything I could throw at it so this time I stayed with the 1500 instead of the 2500 even tho I know of 2 guys that lost their Ram transmissions. Both of them were desk jockeys to. Never towing anything but the occasional small boat or something like that.

I'm sure its flat so slow and steady and ill get it there. A friend told me to find a big rig and draft as much as possible.
Nothing like driving 15+ hours behind a big rig??

I think I'd rather pay the few bucks extra in gas and enjoy the scenery.
... and safety. If you ever get caught in a big air cavitation behind those big boys, you're in for a wild ride.

Interesting thread. I tow a 27' travel trailer, car hauler and boat with my 07 5.7. I ordered my 2WD truck with the towing package, 3.92 limited slip and traction control. I changed my rear tires to E load rated to deal with the weight of a conventional trailer. My truck tows just fine, my biggest complaint is that with the reduced towing mileage, and only a 24 gallon gas tank, I have to really be careful to refuel often. You can't pull in to many gas stations pulling a 27' trailer, actually 29' with tongue. I am considering carrying extra gas in some type of safe gas can. I am getting ready to do my second transmission fluid change, pretty important if you tow anything heavy. I now store my trailer where I usually vacation, and don't have to tow it so much. For short trips, and not driving on the highways, I don't hook up my load leveling bars and it tows fine.

I have a 2013 ram cc hemi and I pulled my 27ft crossroads trailer at 6000lbs and had no problem. I live in the hill capital of the states, Pa. Not very easy on the fuel but I have a good hitch and factory brake controller and it did very well. Now I just bought a 33ft Prowler and dry wt is 7900. I am picking it up Thursday so ill let you know how much difference there is. I had a 2012 quad cab set up the same way and it also did great! wanted the extra room so got the crew.

With my 13 Hemi 4x4 6speed and 3.92 w/limited slip. I am impressed with the towing I tow a 16 ft enclosed trailer it does down shift once in a while. Only real complaint is millage about 8mpg average. Not that big of deal.

If it was a one-way trip, I would be looking forward to it no matter what I had to tow/haul.
