I've always done the first oil and filter change a little prematurely at 3,000 miles when my truck is still new. After the 2nd oil change I'll change to Amsoil full synthetic.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with what you're doing, but that's based on past oil testing used in a 5.9 Cummins... Me, I'm going to go with factory recommendations, until I get some oil test reference points...
Wow…. Thank for the heads up.

I read the 15K miles part, but skimmed over the 6 months part. I was just assuming it was a year, because I have a couple other vehicles that say use the oil indicator or 1 year….. whichever comes first….

Well, I know what happens when I ass-u-me….

Luckily, I haven't reached 15K or 6 months yet…

Thanks again...

I was taught to look at the stick. If you cannot see the imprint on the stick then the oil needs to be changed. If it does go over 7000 miles though, I will change it then.

The oil life monitor took me to 9470 miles until it got to 10%. My wife's new VW runs synthetic, and their factory recommendation is 10/10,000. I run highway miles, and did that in 5 months of ownership.

Dealer told me for warranty the truck can go to 16,000 Kms (10000 miles) before being changed. I am currently at 7300, will change it around 8000 Kms.

Now I just go by the oil indicator thingy.

Holy shit...you mean i been doing it wrong this whole time...i havent been subtracting pi!!!

I have a 2013 Sport. Has 10,000KM. I still haven't done the 1st oil change. Oil life monitor on it is at 35%. I should prob get it done early because it's the first oil change. Going to full synthetic.

I follow the OLM after 5000 miles.
As long as you use the Chrysler MS-6395 spec, you can follow the OLM with conventional motor oil. With my driving habits, that will work out to ~10k miles to get the OLM to 5% or so. Synthetic won't improve you fuel economy, make your engine last longer, or anything else. It can extend your change interval, but the OLM and warranty protection mandate when we change anyhow. Changing at 5000 miles with synthetic is a waste of resources and a waste of your hard earned money. Now, those that live in harsh winter climates, a synthetic oil with better cold flow properties might be helpful for startup, but even that is not measurable in engine life at all.
