I'm pretty partial to scopes, but I can see why a Red Dot would make sense with an AR. I'm also partial to American made, had good results with Leupold and especially Burris on hard recoiling rifle caliber Thompson Contenders including a .358 Winchester 14" barrel. That gun ate a bunch of scopes until I fitted a Burris long eye relief pistol scope. Eventually I sold that barrel, it was very accurate, but my wrist couldn't handle the nasty recoil of full power loads.

I agree I have always been a scope guy all I have ever had. if I go scope it will be a luepold vx-1 but its only .223 and an 18 inch barrel with adjustable gas block so recoil shouldn't be a problem

I have both. A red dot on my H&K 22 and a scope on my S&W. For coyotes I would go with the scope. Better accuracy at a longer distance as long as you use the correct ammo. You will have almost no perceptible recoil on a .223.

With the low mass buffer I am not worried about recoil at all it should be a sewing machine I thought about doing scope as well as 45 mounts for either irons or a red dot down the road I appreciate the comments so far though

In all seriousness. i would go with a 1-4 scope such as... http://www.opticsplanet.com/burris-1...131122043949:s

not necessarily that one but that type... alot of Black rifle guys put those on the RECCE builds.

It depends on the caliber. On my .308 I have a 4.5-14x40 mil-dot and that rifle shoots clover leaf groups at 200 yards with factory ammo.

I'm assuming it is a 5.56 build though? If that's the case a lot of magnification would be a bit of a waste. I'm partial to red dots, but if you want a bit more power then I'd get a scope with a max power of 4 or less and an illuminated reticle since you said it'll be a coyote rig. Have you tried a red dot and magnifier setup? I have one on my sig556 and I really like the modularity and flexibility, its a little bulky with the magnifier attached if that's something you care about.

Keep in mind it'll be faster on target with lower power and illuminated reticle.

One thing I learned the hard way is not to go cheap on optics. After beating 3 scopes to death on my slug gun I plopped down the money for an Aimpoint and it can finally hold a zero now. Obviously recoil won't be an issue for you but you get what you pay for in terms of clarity and sharpness. I never understood why people think that a $200 scope is a good match for am $800 rifle.

I like the looks of something like that but I never have seen one of them before

I know what you mean the whole whole saying spend the same on your optics as you did you gun. And yes its a .223 gun and what you said about being faster on target is the main reason I looked at red dot becuase most of my hunting will he 50-400 anything further than that I have a .308 tack driver set up
