Ok, so I’ve been living with my straight piped DODM80 for about 2 weeks now and although it sounds NICE, I’m considering putting my Mufflex 14 back on my truck. Allow me explain…….Despite all the YouTube videos out there saying that a DODM80 won’t drone at highway speeds, mine does. Not constantly but around 30-40% of the time and that is just enough to make me have second thoughts and that is where I think the videos are a bit misleading. Sure, you get drivebys and startups but really capturing the low frequencies of the drone inside the cab while driving is difficult without some sophisticated audio equipment. Computer speakers
and gopros just don’t capture it and your ears know it instantly when you hear it. Not to mention that sound is so subjective and everyone hears things differently.
From what I’ve noticed, if I’m driving on a flat section of interstate and giving the truck just enough throttle to keep it around 60MPH or so, it is almost as quiet as stock but as soon as you give it more throttle, the groan starts. It grows to an almost unbearable tone just before the torque converter
unlocks or right before a tranny downshift. Even though it does not sound like much, I tend to spend a significant amount of time in that section of the powerband especially since not all roads are flat around my area. I knew it was bad when I was listening to a track on XM that I had never heard before and even turned up, it was difficult to tell if what I was hearing was the truck or beats from the song.
On the other hand, a cold start or accelerating on to an onramp is music to my ears and that’s where I’m conflicted. The DOD14M sounds nice but it wasn’t loud enough for me. The DODM80 is loud enough and I get compliments everywhere I go but if I can’t somehow figure out how to reduce the drone, I’m going to have to go back to the 14. I know a cutout is an option and maybe glasspacks but I’m not sure on either of those. Maybe I’m asking for the impossible – loud but no drone. I’m going to give myself two weeks to decide if I can live with the truck the way it is or if I will quiet her down. If I do, there will be an almost new DODM80 posted up in the classified section.
