Cleaned the chrome clad wheels this afternoon. I started with using pledge to get to the real bad stuff that's been on there for how long. As I was cleaning the first wheel, I noticed that there was a small area where a sticker might have been on the rim. I found it to be true on all the rims. Anyways, I started thinking and broke out the WD-40 to clean that specific part. ( worked great for removing LoveBugs off paint without damage) I started using the WD-40 on the whole wheel, and it worked out real well, it not only cleaned off the sticky stuff, but also removed the water and gunk too. About 10 to 15 minutes per wheel.

I posted this here before but it is worth repeating.

When I worked at a chrome wheel company we did a lot of research on over-the-counter products and some of the results were shocking.

Just because it says chrome cleaner on the bottle does NOT mean it is good for chrome surfaces.

We always recommended plain soap and water for the wheels, and in times of extra heavy road grime some cleaners were ok to use (I don't want to get into a war of what brands are best).

But we did find that products that contained phospohoric acid and ammonia biflouride raised the potential for damage. And cleaning when wheels were hot increased the odds of damage.
