My 2012 and my dads 2012 ram 1500s seem to start weird sometimes. This is going to be hard to explain but if I hold the key it cranks, starter stumbles slightly then it starts, maybe a couple seconds top. If I just turn the key quickly and let off it seems to crank for 2-3 seconds then start. I notice it does this when its cold. Not the motor, but the way cranks the starter. Anybody elses 12s start funny?
I noticed way back when I got my truck when I held the key to start position until it fired up that is would start funny. I learned just to flick it to the start position for a half second and the truck knows when to release the starter on it's own. Spooky huh?
I will try a half second I feel like im holding it to long or not enough. If I just flick it, it seems to crank way to much before starting. The more threads im reading about it some are saying its a trans issue and with the valve body.
People are saying that the issue with your truck not starting correctly is the transmission?? Where the heck are they getting that from?! lol. You could have the transmission right out of the truck and it should still start no problem.... but anyways.
On the new Rams you don't have to hold the key to start it at all. It's a tip type switch. All you have to do is literally flick the key to the start position and let it go. The truck will do everything it needs to all by itself.
When it's cold it will be a bit harder to start the truck. The battery has slightly less power, the oil is thicker, all that stuff. It's pretty normal to have that happen. If it's really having a hard time it could be a power issue. Check the battery terminals and make sure everything is connected nice and tight. The battery shouldn't be warn out yet but you never know, that's always a possibility.
