Default Recalibrating speedo post larger tire install?

Hey guys,

I did a cursory check and couldn't find anything for the 2014 Hemi's. I'll be installing some 37's soon, and wonder what solutions are available to recalibrate my speedo after install.

Can a dealership tweak this setting in my ECU or whatever is affected? Do I require a tuner that modifies that datapoint and stays installed under the hood?

I have the 8 speed, which is neither here nor there, but imagine something needs adjustment so any tranny can continue shifting at the optimal points.

Anyone addressing this on their build, or are you guys happy with where the trucks are shifting now?

Thanks!

J

At this time there isn't any way to recalibrate the speedo for that large of a tire on a '14. The dealerships can't recalibrate to a size that large and no tuners are available for a '14 yet. Because of that there's no way to tune the transmission either. Right now you're SOL for probably at least 6 months or so before companies start releasing '14 tunes.

Ok, good to know. In for a crappy winter I guess.

Can you explain the ugly little details that illuminate just 'how' that lack of recalibrating will affect things?

Thanks

Well the obvious one is that your speedometer will be off. What some guys don't realize is that means that your odometer is off as well. You will actually be driving further than what your odometer or trip meter states. Then going further down the line that means your EVIC fuel mileage will be wrong and your hand calculated mileage will be wrong unless you factor in the percentage of tire size difference into your calculation.

As far as drivability goes it won't be too bad.... especially because you do have an 8 speed. The transmission shift points will be a little off but the truck should relearn and compensate for it a bit.

There are TONS of guys who lift trucks and put larger tires on without ever tuning the truck or recalibrating the speedo. So you don't have a lot to worry about.... It's just not going to be as good as it possibly could be.

Well thats confidence building .. right on.

Psst: Is my instantaneous fuel consumption going to 'appear' improved, or worsened? My co-pilot (wife) will have eagle eyes trained on that

The math I can handle. Good points.

The EVIC will show that your fuel economy is worse because the truck will think you aren't driving as many miles as you actually are. Plus it actually will be worse because of the larger and heavier tires.

one good thing ive found from this problem is my truck thinks it has has less miles then it does. This keeps you under warranty longer than you would normally be.

theres a switch you can flick to turn the odometer off... you wont have a speedometer either but no miles will register on your rig (1500 for sure not sur about the 3/4 tons)

When I put 35s on my truck, the local dealership said that they are not allowed to recalibrate to that size, they are only allowed to recalibrate to the largest factory tire option. My spedo is off by 5mph at 60 mph (actually doing 65).

I would imagine the RCMP would have an issue with that, and be quite capable of data mining it's activation after the fact. Just saying ..

Yeah, I plan to hit the road with my GPS and get a bead on how far off I am as well. It's my understanding that speedos are off 'up to' 5% on any car rolling off a lot. So you're not bad.
