Cool Do you remember when?

Do you remember when you got your drivers license?

I was working on an account of mine recently (landscaping) and they were conducting DMV road test in the area using a car parked on the road as the parallel park portion of the test. I would watch each car attempt the maneuver, some with ease and some with great difficulty. All I could think was, they passed or they failed!

How old were you when you got your license? Did you pass on the first try? Any funny stories getting your drivers license? I know each state or country has different written and/or road tests. I got my permit on my 16th birthday and had my license a month later. Passed the first time!

I was driving farm trucks & tractors well before i turned 16
In Connecticut i still had to go to a driving school, i was 15 & drove to the classes
passed the first time, but had my first ticket less then a month later
it was at a crosswalk, at night, bunch of adults stepped off a curb right in front of me, they were heading to a VFW hall, ( the ONLY building on that part of the road )
a cop was in hiding, waiting for any drunk driver to leave the VFW hall parking lot.
He saw what happened & told me that i should have stopped the instant one persons foot stepped off the sidewalk, there were no warning signs, no Stop or Caution light, no Stop Sign, it was in the middle of block & the only lighting was from the VFW sign
I was the only car driving on that section of road at the time.

I still think that i had the Right of Way, in that particular instance

at about the same time, my Cousin up in New Hampshire was getting his license
He went to their mailbox, sent off for a Permit, he had it that same week, delivered by mail, then he drove to the Post Office & spoke to the Postmaster, handed him the Permit, the Postmaster gave him a 10 question exam to fill out, he turned it back in to the Postmaster & it was then sent to the County Seat, he had passed the test & got his drivers license.
The Postmaster was also the local Game Warden & DMV representative in 1959/60

Growing up on a farm in PA where we farmed three farms we drove on the state highway from the time we were 14. I took my test in 1956 at 16 years of age two days after I received my permit. I took the test in our 1954 International farm pick up. Passed first time. Driving all types of farm equipment made us safe drivers early.

Well. I failed the first time!!! (I passed the written test with flying colors though)

First time I took the test I was in my 01 Tahoe. Well you know, thats a pretty big SUV. Then it came to parallel parking. I was told to park behind a PT Cruiser (I had been practicing behind my dads extended cab, long bed F150, so theres a big difference there)

BUT the curb that was there was around 2 inches high, and rounded. So that curb is VERY easy to hop, especially in a Tahoe. Well I didn't feel the curb whatsoever, jumped it by an inch. Automatically failed...

next time I took it I was in my 01 ram and got it perfectly, I knew to stay away from that curb..

My first boss, (drywall company) had me driving his 72 Chevy pickup when I had just turned 15 (1979). Damn near gave him a heart attack on several occasions. And although I had several close calls, I never wrecked it. So when I started driver's training in high school, I was already comfortable with driving. Passed driver's training easily. Dad had a 77 Plymouth Passenger Van that I took the driving test in. The instructor was a little leery at first, but I quickly showed him that I knew what I was doing. Boy, if they could see me now, whipping around a 27 ton fire engine like it was nothing.

I was a late bloomer, so to speak. I didn't get my (Stateside) license until I was almost 17, though I did get a permit of sorts earlier.

I was over in Germany (the old man was active duty Army), and the earliest that it's possible to get a driver's license is 17. The only difference between a driver's license and the permit was the road test. For both you had to take the same test that for the most part tested your knowledge of the international road signs, and to make sure you understood how to interpret correctly the signal a police officer may give you when he's directing traffic.

I spent the better part of a year learning how to drive and gaining experience in Germany. I would drive pretty much anywhere we went (Dad had a Jeep). He would give me about 6" of extra space when he was getting me to parallel park, so once you've mastered that it's not a big deal.

We came back to the States for my sister's wedding. While we were home I took my Stateside license test, and I passed without an issue, even though I took the test on my grandmother's Old's 88.

When we returned to Germany, I still couldn't drive, as I was not yet 17, and even after I turned 17 I never got around to getting my "German" license. I continued to drive almost every time we went out, and I even drove a few times with friends (including a Porsche 911 @ 150+ mph on the autobahn).

I would love to have a go at the autobahn. It's on my bucket list.
