I grew up in New York City (Staten Island) where you had to be 16 to take drivers ed and 17 to get a license. Took the test twice in a VW Karman Ghia stick shift. The first time I took the road test, I failed for not stopping at a stop sign that was impossible to see, as it was bent to the ground twisted facing the opposite direction and partially obscured by some bushes. Second time I passed with flying colors even though the examiner tried to make it difficult by having me parallel park on a steep slope. Once parked I had to pull out without rolling backwards. Received a nice compliment from the examiner.

I got my license at 16. Been driving for years. I never took a driver's test though. Not required in FL if you take driver's education class in high school. I think that's pretty stupid(most of the kids couldn't drive worth a shit). One girl backed in to a tree, another hopped a curb and hit a guard rail. They are on the road today somewhere...

I took my test when I was 16 years old.

My instructor was a woman of about 24 years of age (just a guess though, and super attractive), she told me to drive straight down the road and turn right.....I turned left.

She gave me crap and marked down on the sheet of paper. I argued with her and told her that she told me to turn left not right, and that it was her that was in the wrong.

She said that she has done this course a million times and knows the route, and that she was right.

I again argued and said that since she did this course all the time, she may have thought that she told me to turn one way, but in fact had me turn the other.

In the end I convinced her it was her error not mine.......but in my head I knew it was me that was wrong and not her.

I was nervous for the rest of the course, but didn't have any issues and passed with flying colours.

At the end of the course where we had to park the car and she counted up my score, I asked her out for a date.

Her reply...."sure, I just have to make sure my husband can stay home with the kids tonight".

I felt like a total tool, but rather than letting her know I felt like a total tool I replied with "great, I can wait here whilst you go and call him"

She gave me a great big smile, congratulated me, and then said as she was leaving the car "I did say turn right".

I laughed, gave her a cheeky smile and said "yes you did".

I had been driving a myriad of large vehicles my family had (work Suburban, Grand Wagoneer, early 70's 440 Imperial & New Yorker) in south Jersey (lots of backroads and whatnot to practice in) since I was about 12-13. Got my permit at 16, when I was 17, decided to hedge my bets for the driver's test (they had a route through the Atlantic County Vo-tech and court buildings back towards Babcock Rd) and asked my aunt if I could use her '90 automatic 4 banger Cavalier. Easiest parallel park job I've ever done lol.

I got my drivers license when I was 16 years old. It's been almost 52 years and man have peoples driving habits changed. So many drivers always in a hurry.
