Default 08 Ram 1500 Heater Core Replcement

Hello All,
I am new to this site and I was told you all can help me. I have owned a 1997, 2001, 2004, and currently own a 2008 Dodge Ram. I love my current truck but it has been more problems than all the others. I need to replace the heater core and I was told this will cost about 1200 dollars which I do not have. I am handy so I bought the manual and it looks like I need to completely remove the dash and evacuate the AC system. Do I really have to do that or is there a shortcut. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No short cut to replacing the heater core in that the dash does have to come out, but evacuating the A/C system? That's a new one on me.
