Default Differential Question

Hello all, ive got a 2001 1500 Ram 5.9 Sport 4X4. Was driving the other day on some slick icy roads and slid sideways, right after that i had this noise that sounded like calipers rubbing on rotars, metal on metal, didnt matter if i was accelerating or coasting, the noise was there. I jacked up the rear end and the right rear tire i could shack like it was loose, The movement however was not side to side or up or down, but more or less in and out from the diff. I thought maybe i have a blown bearing, so i took the differential cover off only to find chunks of metal in there. i removed the axle, and the bearing and seal looked fine, as well as the axle shaft, I cleaned up the diff, and cant see any where on any of the teeth of the gears. Ive never opened up a diff so im not to familiear with it other than looking and the exploded diagram. Any idea what this might be? See pic attached. I noticed the shims that are circular that go on each side of the side gear, i think there called thrust washers with the tabs, they all seem intact as well.

Any help would be great. And also is this something im going to need some fancy tools to further investgate, or rather when im putting this back together?

The larger pieces look like the remains of the c-clip that holds the axle in. The smaller pieces look like bearing cage shrapnel.

Yeah both the C Clips were in tact. Bearing shrapnel, where would that be coming from a diff bearing on the inside of the diff

Well there are three roller bearings inside the case. One behind the pinion gear, and one on either side of the ring gear carrier. Is there any side to side movement of the carrier?

Be real cautious. There will be precision shims on each side of those bearings, and they are a bear to get back in if you've never done it before. Make sure they stay in order.... Same with the caps.

This is pretty much what your up against if you have to change anything more than the carrier bearings. It gets pretty involved and requires some specialty tools. If it's just the side bearings you'll still need a press to R&R the bearings. Keep the caps and the shims in the correct orientation and you'll be ok. Now... if you mess up, the truck will be immobilized and a tow will be required to get it to a driveline shop.
