Question Expected mpg with 5.7 hemi, and 3.92 axels

Hi Guys,

New here, so don't know if this has been asked & answered. I'm looking at buying either a 2014 Chevy 4x4 LTZ, or a 2014 Ram Laramie. A Ram would be totally new experience for me, as I've been a Chevy/Ford guy for a long time. In any case, I don't have a clue as to what to expect as far as mileage goes if I decide on the Ram with 3.92 gears. I live here in Colorado were Mt passes all long climbing grades then come the down grades. I would prefer to use the tanny gears combined with the 3.92 axel to both climb & descend rather than the brakes.

I'm looking at the Quad cab to compare vs the Double cab Chevy. The Chevy I'm looking at comes with the 3.73 axel's which I know will get 18 mpg here.

I am also wondering about the 8 speed tranny on the Ram. All I can see is a knob on the dash showing PNRD, so where, and how are the gear selectors should I want to downshift?

Respects,
Richard

I was a Ford guy and bought a 2014 sport with the 2.92 gear ratio...My gas millage is in Metric and I am averaging right now 15l per 100k...Not sure what that is to convert. But my millage is getting better and this is by far the nicest truck I have ever owned. I dont think you can go wrong with any of the trucks you are looking at but that Hemi motor is the ultimate..Just a different animal then what Ford and GM are offering.
My 2 cents worth

Truthfully, all of the big 3's trucks get within 1 mpg of each other when similarly spec'd out, so it is a wash in my opinion. Get the truck you like the best and don't get caught up in the .5-1 mpg difference in daily use.

The +/- gear shift is on the steering column on the 8speed. If you push and hold the - button, the truck will downshift to the lowest possible safe gear based on your current speed.

Thank you, that's the kind of information I'm looking for. Definitive, and to the point

Respects,
Richard

That's not accurate.

The +/- gear shift buttons are top gear limiters, they don't downshift upon pushing them unless you just happen to be in top gear a at the time.

Say you are accelerating at highway speeds and you hit the - button while you are in 6th gear in your 8 speed system. Your truck will still shift into 7th gear--but not 8th. What you did by pushing the - button was limit the top gear to 7th. Push it twice and top gear is 6th gear, and so on. If you have pushed it twice so top gear is 6th and you push the + button, then your new top gear is bumped up to 7th.

I do think this application would really shine in hilly/mountainous country more so than most flatlander applications.

I read in the owners manual that if you push and hold the - button, it will shift to the lowest gear that is safe... This is for engine breaking. I've used it, and it does work.

Thats a good question to ask, You will see 14-17 city and 19-25 hwy, I dont think there is software yet for that year truck but you can expect 1-3 miles extra with a gas saver tune and a simple drop in K&N filter. Buy the dodge friend, you wont go wrong with it.
