Default Replace or Fix the Transmission

Hi, my 1997 5.9 4x4 transmission has been sounding kind of odd for a while. It would make a considerable more noise when I gave it gas and go back to quiet when I took my foot off. Recently it started shifting real hard and going through trans oil quickly. I took it in and they said it needed to be replaced.

I remember when I purchased it, there was a known transmission problem. I took it in way back when and it was "fixed" by AAMCO.

So, the question is, do I need to completely replace the transmission or can I replace some parts that is causing the problem?

I need to save the money and would like to do it myself... Just need to know what to do.

Thanks for the help.

If it does need to be rebuilt/replaced, then I would opt to rebuild it.
