Default No Power This Morning - Super Cold Outside

Its about -25 degrees out with God knows what kind of windchill this morning. My factory remote start didn't want to work so I went out to start with the key fob. It started to crank, slowly, and then the alarm started going off. I got the alarm to quit and attempted to start it again. After some extended cranking, it finally fired up. Let it sit and run while I got ready for work.

Started heading to work and notice that I can only go about 15-20mph and that I have check engine light on. Its not running rough, just wont go.

FYI I have a DS inTune tune loaded.

Could something have happened with the computer?

Could it be something with the security system limiting power being as the alarm went off?

Any guidance will be appreciated.

Not sure about the alarm and tuner etc... But I would recommend that you have your truck plugged in when its that cold. When its -40C here there is a twenty to thirty degree temp difference in the oil and coolent when its pluged in and not. This should help with the sluggish cranking. If you are already plugging it in then disregard this post completly.

Low battery voltage from cold temps and extended crank time ? Is the charging system working ? What happens if you shut the truck off and restart it ? If everything is ok after a warm restart I would check the battery and see if it may be failing. Love these Minnesota winters !

I have not been plugging it in, hasn't seemed needed yet.

My charging system seems to be working fine, at least according to my dash guages. I did shut it off when I got to work and restart it and sitting in park I could rev my rpms like normal. But I will see at lunch how it's running. If its still having issues, i'll pull it into the shop and check a few things.

Keep the ideas coming guys!

Haven't ran it since lunch, been in my office. But it was running smooth, no noises or anything like that. Just no power and wouldn't get past 15-20mph. I'm going to go put my code scanner on here shortly if I get a chance.

Sounds like a "limp mode" to protect the truck ?

Being a 2009, original battery I take it? I think besides the plugging in the engine heater is concerned, it would most certainly help. But I think your battery is on its way out. Your Cold Cranking Amps in your present battery is probably about done son.

Well, that would explain the hard start in the cold. But with the alternator properly charging the system, how is that going to effect the performance while running? CCA should have no bearing on performance past starting the vehicle. At least in my mind, correct me if I'm wrong.

You may have a bad cell in the battery and not getting the full 12 volts and the alternator is trying to charge the battery and is having problems. Check to make sure you have 12 volts with the engine not running and 14 volts running.

If you have less than 11 volts you have a bad cell and will need to replace the battery.

JMO and it could just be the cold temperature.
