Default Trailer Brake Controlle

Hi All,

I am a new member so bare with me. Sure could use HELP !

I bought a new Ram 1500 Big Horn November 2012 from a dealer up North. My truck did not come with the trailer brake module installed; the dealer told me - no problem i could add it anytime i wanted so i bought the truck. I moved down South and this December 2013 i went to the local dealer. The parts department sold me a 82212548 Brake Controller. After the part came in i scheduled to have it installed from the service folks. Service told me it would take about 1 and 1/2 hours to install, so i waited. Two hours later, service told me they could not install the module in my truck. Seems the issue is that my year truck came with two different wiring harnesses, one with two connectors and my truck with one connector - the brake module requires two connectors.

Now that i am buying a travel trailer, i find out that my truck does not have a factory option for trailer brakes. Had i known this at the time of purchase, i would have chosen a different vehicle. Anyway, aftermarket options (if spliced in) void the warranty and the don't interface with the EVIC (no dashboard display). They also install in a manor that seems to interfere with your knees, and they are hard to see.

Has anyone found an older OEM part that installs into the slot on the left?

Thx Roland

The OEM Brake Controller can be installed in a Ram with only the single connector, the kit was suppose to be available sometime in 2011 from the dealers

There is thread about how to do it here on this site, it is a long read because of all the posts concerning it

Also you can go to the Etrailer website & get a nice after market brake controller, but it can be a knee knocker, if you have long legs

I bought a tekonsha p3 from etrailer for mine. The wiring harness is direct plug and play. No splicing at all.. Check out the 4th generation towing section here on the forum there's a few threads about brake controllers you can look at
