Angry Cut Wires Now Truck is DEAD

HELP! A buddy was pulling my brake controller to sell to another forum member here and went to cut the wires before disconnecting the battery. There was a spark - which clued him in to then disconnect the battery but the damage was likely done.

He disconnected the battery, cut the wires, taped them, removed the controller, put everything back together and now the truck is DEAD! I've got lights but no power to the key - no radio, no elec door locks, Horn works but not if you try the key fob panic button.

So there is some power to the lights but anything key associated is DEAD.

We started pulling fuses and found the 30amp to the electric brake was blown. Didn't have a 30 on hand, so used a spare 20 but no joy. Pulled a 30 and a 40 from other non-essential circuits and still no joy.

At this point only option is to tow it dealer Monday morning unless anyone here has an idea. And no, I don't have a code reader, don't know anyone who does, nor do I know any mechanics who could come out and take a look at it.

Clearly it's more than just the fuse that shorted but I don't know what else to check.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read this thread. Cutting usually results in a bad day, especially if there's sparks and smoke involved. The CAN system is a low voltage communication protocol and not very robust in its design. Sorry but it sounds expensive.

Yes, pulled every fuse and checked each. Only the elec brake 30amp was blown. Replaced but no joy. Left battery disconnected overnight to reset computer but again no joy. No idea what the CAN is, where it is, or how to check it.

Agree it was a stupid move. Cut wires trying to help forum members - 1 who needs wires and connectors for his truck - one who needed just the controller unit. As I don't need controller thought it wouldn't hurt anything. Had a teenage kid doing it for me as at age 60 I cant get down under dash easily anymore. My bad that I didn't check he had disconnected battery first. That might have made things different.

Now it looks like a tow to the dealership and I suspect expensive repairs.

The CAN Bus is the modern day ECU..and yes it is expensive to replace and yes the brake controller is connected thru it. BTW...the harness is also plug and play..no cutting. Sorry for your troubles, but I am afraid this is gonna get expensive.

Yeah Randy, I totally agree.....Sounds like a possibilty that the CAN system fried......

Have it taken to the dealer to have a look at.....Were you not able to just unplug it....Not trying to rub it in however I believe that those would just unplug....

Good luck and I really hope its a simple and inexpensive fix.....

I thank u for the brake controller. By not sure on the cutting of wires. Mine has a plug there for the factory controller. Can u look for a wire diagram to see which wires go where. And trace them back. If it would help I can take a test light out to my harness and see which wires have power all the time. And which ones just have power when the key is on.if that would help message me. So it will send me an email to my phone.
