Sorry to hear this but hope it can get fixed. As an electrician by seeing a spark and the "magic" smoke escape is never a good thing. I do hope it is something that maybe you have missed and a rather inexpensive repair compared to the other option.

Almost, the CAN bus is the communication path amongst all the various modules in the truck. The Engine controller, the transmission controller, the door controller, the radio, the power control module, brake controller, etc. etc. each module has some receive/transmit hardware on them so they can all send messages back and forth to each other. If the CANBus wiring gets cut or if one of the modules gets fried all communication can get garbled. It reduces a lot of wiring which is why all auto manufacturers are using this design. From what the OP has mentioned I would check the PCM first since it's one of the key controllers that distributes power to everything else. The system is great when it works however can be a really PITA when something goes wrong.

Thanks guys for the ideas and criticism - not undeserved. I KNOW the controller can be unplugged - but if you read my earlier post I was selling the controller to one forum member, and another needed the wiring connectors to splice into his truck. That's why we didn't unplug it --- and even if we had the wires would have been cut anyway. The issue, I suspect is that the kid cut into the wire with the battery connected. (By the way there was no smoke.) Had it been disconnected, I presume - and I'm no electrician - that the problem might well have been avoided, maybe not.

Anyway, the two forum members will get what they need. The truck goes to the dealer in the AM and I can only hope it's some module that is interrupting communications and not the entire computer fried. (We found and replaced two blown fuses and I did leave the battery disconnected hoping for a 'reset' but no joy).

Interestingly I found the elec door locks work if you use the buttons on the door handle, but they do not work if you try to lock/unlock remotely using the keyfob. Hoping this suggests there is a module that's interrupting flow of power to the key - cause anything associated with the key is dead but lights, horn, locks all work. Either way it won't be cheap - am already out 2-300 bucks given a (minimum) 3 day weekend car rental and the cost of the tow to the dealer and even a minimum 1-hour of shop labor plus needed parts.

Hard lesson learned. I'll update once we know the problem and repairs.

The harness is also plug - n - play...no cutting; just two snap in connectors to the main harness. Good luck with the fix; keep us updated.

I hope for a quick fix as well. And a cheap one. My question why didn't the other guys truck have the other guys truck have the harness. Every 11 dash I been under had it. And I just assumed they used the same harness on all of them and the ones that had the controller had it plugged in. And ones that didn't it was taped up. If u had this much problem getting ur truck to work without it. I bet he has just as much making his truck work with it. I he has to splice wires to make it work. Just my thought.

Sort of sounds like the key/truck programming has been lost. Have you tried your spare key just for the heck of it?
