Oil/water dilutes air fuel mixture lowering octane rating. Ever had a oil burner when you kick it down sounds like ball bearings in a can? Spark knock from crud in CC and lowered octane.

"Oil/water dilutes air fuel mixture lowering octane rating"

This will never happen in a normal pvc operation.

Being an old pharrt, I seem to recall back when PCV was commonly introduced (I'm thinking now of my 1964 Dodge 440 Station Wagon with a 318 V8 and push-button transmission with torque-bar front suspension) that it was promoted as keeping the upper cylinders lubricated with oil mist from the crankcase and IMPROVING apparent octane by introducing water vapor similar to water-injection.

I can certainly imagine that it contributes to staining of intake passages but it's usually introduced below throttles, not prior. (I haven't looked at the Ram in consideration of this matter, but I did see the pics posted claiming to show the difference in a before and after I think it was? Only thing is.... if those are pics of before/after... it is curious to me that after is likely also after the "before" was cleaned up for the pic.... which also raises the questions of "how much operation with the catch-can versus the "prior" pic?"... and "why was the throttle body removed if it's working so wonderfully after?" ...and also, "How can the two examples depicted be fairly compared when they are both in a removed condition and therefore likely from completely different vehicles with different operating conditions and times in-service?

IMO most cars/trucks today are designed to go untouched for 100,000 miles and most have warranties to that point. Most people have gotten 150,000 to better than 200,000 miles with very little engine maintenance. maybe a few belts,alt/water pump ect... My last hemi went 300,000 and the body was falling off and was rusted to death. I changed the oil way late and the trans still had the factory fluid in it as well as the rearends and transfercase.

My point, who cares what the intake looks like ! who cares what the octane is. There not race trucks, there NOT fast ect. There daily drivers and work great at that..

I tend to agree with you, barlett. That '64 Dodge went well past 220,000 miles when I gave it away to an old Mexican who took it down to old Mexico and drove it still more. My '92 4L Jeep GC ran 330,000 with cheap oil until it was rear-ended by a texting woman in a Class A MH. (and even after that, we still use it for a farm cow-chaser.) My other Jeep GC ran 130,000 when it was totaled in traffic. My Buick V6 had 240,000 on it when it was sold. The f-f-f-f-Ford 150 351M had 220,000 on it when I sold it and it's still being driven ten years later by the same kid I sold it to.... ALL with no modifications to the PCV system and using whatever dino oil was cheapest that week.
This catch can is not one of the mods I'd have on the top of my list.

Diesel, while rated differently ( cetane ) but similar as gasoline's octane, has the same anti-detonation measurements factored in. Non-emission diesels run fine on 50-100% motor oil, new or used, and that's with a much higher compression ratio higher than a gas engine. Most are over 18:1.

Water. Water has, and still is used in engine injection systems to actually help prevent detonation. The very same thing high octane fuel is used for

You can Wikipedia "water injection engines"
and google "run diesel on waste oil"

I instaled catch cat. When you empty one after 2000 miles , you will know what the catch can is for.

The "PCV" valve was made to keep the oil vapor and cylinder blow by out the atmosphere. .
Water injection controls the uneven flame path in a cylinder to control detonation mimicking a higher octane fuel. The water crud going thur the "PCV" hose is not even close to a water injection system operation. .
Oil vapor going thur a "PCV" hose dilutes fuel/air mixture. .
Does water crud and oil vapor crud dilute air/fuel mixture and lessen the affect of a given octane? Yes. .
Will engines run thousands of miles with little to no maintenance. Yes. .
I like to keep my engine clean. .
The Catch Can does what it says. .
If a person doesn't want to run one, fine. .
Break time..............
