Unhappy diesel runaway and fire

1997 ram 5.9 diesel. Immediate after engine start, the starter motor in runaway condition. No choice but to drive home 1 mile distance. Alternator trouble light "on", smelled burning wiring. Engine shutdown ok but starter motor still running. Opened hood and had fires on the starter motor power lead, pos battery cable terminals on fire, main power wire to ignition burnt in two (on batt side of fusible link) and looked like "roman candle" with sparks and fire ejecting out of top of the fuel shutdown solenoid !!! I had to disconnect both batteries (dual batts) before I could get things shutdown and ran out of breath putting flames out. Total time from starting engine to disabling batteries was approx 5 minutes. Long enough to cause severe problems. Guessing the "new starter" I installed 9 months ago with its "lifetime guarantee" failed and the start contacts welded themselves together creating runaway condition? Questions: why did breakers, fusible links fail to function and prevent the serious fire damage? Why do the Dodge dealers head mechanics state they never heard of such a thing?!!Where can I find ignition shematics so I can begin tracing burnt wires? Chiltons no help at all with wiring issues. Appreciate any help on this one and anyone else ever had this problem? Thanks
