Default Confused About Radio and Camera

Ok, I am new here, and it may just that I am in information overload but I am feeling confused. It seems that there are tons of problems with the back up camera being installed and wired in. I have read thread after thread on this subject, and it seems that maybe this job is over my expertise, and I am an engineer! ( structural, but I like to think I am smart) .

Here is the deal on my truck. I just purchased a 430 REN system from Ebay, will be delivered today or tomorrow, planning on installing it over the weekend. From what I have read that it is a pretty easy install ( aside from getting the shifter handle to come loose). In a couple of weeks I am planning on purchasing the OEM camera. I read a thread on this and other forums that the vehicle will need to be "flashed" to allow for the camera to be recognized.

Here it is the point that I am confused. Wiring in this camera, I have heard numerous problems about wiring this thing, and hearing that the dealerships have problems "flashing" this thing in. Everything seems cut and dry up until you get to the wiring, and without actually having the instructions in front of me to review, I am feeling that maybe this in not a job to perform on a truck I have had for 3 weeks.

Looking for some "You can do it" support here!

Thanks
Packmaster!

Default Confused About Radio and Camera

Installing a new camera is the same as installing a new device on a PC. The only difference is, a computer is programed to recognized a new device. On our truck the dealer has to flash the on board computer to recognize the camera.

I think part of the problem is the lack of knowledge at the tech level in knowing how to do the flash. Some of them lack the computer skills like some are a little short of mechanical skills. If you were ever able to watch some of them work, you would know what I'm talking about.

Thanks Silvercreek,

I understand what you are talking about as far as the tech's go. At the Service Dept of the Dealership I bought my truck at, you cannot see the tech's working. However I have seen the tech's at my local tire shop, and the tech's at some other dealership's.

I am surprised that you bought a REN 430 radio, most people don't know that it also works similar to the RBZ 430, but the firmware is more like the RER 730

I do hope that you bought the model that uses the HIGH SPEED CAN BUS
the low speed can bus radio will not work in the 2009 & newer Ram

When i purchased the Parkview Camera from Dodge, the package had the camera, harnesses, wire ties, & a Installation CD in the package
Now i believe that they also have the tailgate handle in the package
My 2009 Ram had a plain tailgate handle, there was no locking mechanism, so i had to order the handle that locked & of course the camera hole

The dealership had no trouble Flashing the Parkview Camera into my 2009 Ram & that was over 4 years ago, by the way, i have the RER 730 radio

The touch screen radios for the 4th Gen Rams are all High Speed Can Bus
REN 430, RBZ 430, both are non Navigation radios
RHB 430, RER 730, RHR 730, all are Navigation radios

If you have the center floor console, First set your Parking Brake then lift the rubber from the consoles cubby holes, you will see at least 2 screws under the cubby nearest the dash board & there may be others
then on the shifter, right below the shift handle itself, there is a collar that you push down, that releases the shift handle grip itself, near your Neutral/Drive position, you will see a little tab, lift it up, press down on the RED release tab & you will be able to move the shifter stalk to a more convenient position if needed.

On youtube, there are several videos on how to remove the radio itself

Thanks GTyankee, Yes I bought the REN, and it is the High Speed Model. I put it in last night, works great, wish I could say it was a flawless install. I had two hiccups in the whole thing putting it together. The Radio is in and the dash and console are all back together, but that little tab you mention, I seem to have misplaced that, I knew where it was, until the cup that my screws were in fell over onto my black carpeting. Must thank my dog for that, the second hiccup is that the gear selection lights on the center console don't work now. I am going back out here in a little while to investigate the light issue , and look for that tab cover again.

Anybody know a part number for that tab? and maybe the bulb in the consule?
For anybody that hasn't done this, and has the 115V plug in the dash, the cover on the outside of the plug comes off, there is a screw there. Also there are two screws in the tray at the front of console, One screw under each cup holder, and one screw in the center cubby. Also be careful of the power outlet wires and the light for the Gear Selecting letters. There is not alot of slack in the wires.

Next will be the camera install in a few weeks.

All is well again! Found the Tab, and a 3 dollar bulb from the dealership, we are all back in action!

Great !!

Next time it will be easier

If you are going to install the OEM back up camera, you will want to have something like a reversible drill & the bits that will fit into all of those screws that secure the tailgate panel

Well to add an option for you, I swapped in an RBZ and used lockpic to get passed this OEM camera issue. I purchased and audiovox camera off Ebay for front and rear and ran my own wiring to the lockpic. I can have my cameras work while driving if I want. They also automatically come on when in the correct gear, by that I mean rear camera when in reverse and forward camera when in drive below 5mph. It all works flawlessly. Best part, no trip to the dealer was required.

I upgraded from base RES to RHR and also used lockpick.I used a crime stoper camera. The only problem I had was lockpick went bad after 5 or 6 months just RMA'd and now works fine. I am planing to add a camera to the back of my camper and tie it into the system.I did not have the dealer flash my truck and the nav turn by turn displays in the evic, changing radio stations also shows up in evic.
