Default Towing a 6,250 LB boat with 1500

I have an 06 4x4 Megacab with the 5.7L Auto and 325/65/18s... My mother has a 28.5 foot cruiser boat that specs at 6250lbs... curious as to how my truck (mainly tranny) would hold up on a 250 mile haul to Table Rock come summer. Typically it stays in the water and if it gets pulled out itd be drug around with her 01 Cummins but we would end up putting her Cummins under the 30' 10500lb 5th wheel rv for the trip.

Also, where is the best place and what am i looking at for a good inexpensive tranny cooler and are they easy to install?

Thanks, Cale

... also, it doesnt have much tongue weight as most of the weight is back on the triple axles and has a long trailer tongue. However it does had a 10' beam (requiring permits) and curious where the best place is to order tow mirrors the cheapest?

Your truck most likely already has a trans cooler. You can upgrade to the HD cooler which a lot of 3rd gen guys do, it's a direct swap. I don't know the details, you can search for more.

I would think you're truck would be ok. My 4.7L is rated to tow somewhere around 7,000 lbs. I'm sure your hemi is rated for more. I've towed 5,000ish up about 2000 miles and it was fine. I've towed more over short distances without issues as well.

The transmission will hold up fine. The only thing I'd watch for is if you are on steep grades for long periods of time watch engine and trans temps. Mine did get very hot climbing the mountains with 5000lbs. There were periods where I was holding ~half pedal for about 10 minutes straight.

1500 mega cab would have about an 8500# GVWR, so the towing cap would be somewhere more than that. They are a 1500 badge on a 2500 truck. I wouldn't hesitate to tow that. Just have to use common sense when towing anything that big and heavy

Alrighty. Yes I have noticed it seems to be a 1500 sticker on the side for no reason. It's apparent that's it's a 2500 under that skirt. Is there anyway to find out if mine already has the HD cooler? And what's the difference in the 1500 tranny and 2500 and which one would I have? Truck has 130k and I know Dodge hasn't been reputable on their trannys when they get high mileage.

For a living I pull two 45' semi trailers at the same time full of beer grossing 80-100k depending on the season. Slow and easy does it with this big ol boat.

Yeah, if you look at your axles and brakes, your truck is a 3/4 ton. Depending on the year, the Megacabs were badged as a 1500 or a 2500. I know in that year truck, the transmission would be a 48RE if it had a Cummins in it, but I'm not sure what would be in it with the Hemi. The 48RE is pretty stout and is usually only a problem when people start adding a lot of torque with the Cummins.

I don't know for a fact that your truck has a big tranny cooler, but I bet it does. You should be able to see it out in front of the radiator, but it might be hidden behind the AC condenser. Either way I wouldn't be afraid to tow that boat with your truck, just make sure it has some kind of trailer brakes on it.

Post a pic of your cooler, trace the lines from the transmission and see where they go.

I'm not sure if your megacab "1500" is really a 2500, but the 1500's have a 545rfe transmission(good transmission, not like the bad rep older ones), and the 2500's have a 66rfe(even better transmission). The poster above me called out an older transmission. I'm not sure what year the 66rfe went in to use but I would think in 06 they were in use in the 2500s. I know for sure that the 545rfe was used in 06 in the 1500s. The later diesels used a 68rfe(again not sure what year that started).

1500 mega cab is a LD 2500. 8500 GVW, 8 bolt hubs, AAM 10.5 out back, and AAM 9.25 front
I think they used the 45Rfe iirc.

performed by an authorized dealer:

Recall # Description Type

H46 STEERING LINKAGE SAFETY
04/27/2009
N62 LEFT OUTER TIE ROD ASSEMBLY SAFETY 12/13/2013

What is the steering linkage safety? and good thing I just found out about the tie rod today lol I just replaced all 4 with Moog this Saturday.

Also Its looking like the gross weight on the boat will be 7200-ish with the trailer. the boat is 6250 all by its self and the trailer does indeed have trailer brakes intergraded in the hitch. More pressure = more braking

DGQ 5-Spd Automatic 545RFE Transmission

You have the 545rfe transmission.

AHC Trailer Tow Group

Most likely has an oil cooler, and probably the larger one.
