Default Problem with my 8spd trans already!!!

Well I just got home from the dealer. The put my running boards on which are awesome. But down side is that the service shifter message I am getting is because it needs a new shifter module already. FML!!!!! Truck has 586 miles on it in a week and light has been on since about 200 mark. Are you freaking kidding me??? Module has to be ordered. I asked if it was a safety issue and was told it shouldn't be. The worst that could happen is that it gets stuck in park. God I hope this isn't going to be a constant issue with this thing. Deepest fears of there not being a way to get trans in gear (ie an over ride) hopefully won't come true but sounds like its a possibility. Shouldn't have to come up with excuses on why my brand new truck is in shop already lol. But this still doesn't deter me from RAM. I love my truck and wouldn't trade it for anything but a crew cab lol hahaha. Btw has anyone else had any problems with their 8spd?

Yeah it's what i feared and posted on these forums many months ago.
All these gizmo's going electronic opens the doors up 3x wider for issues.
I really wish they would of offered the 8 speed with a traditional floor mounted
shifter. I don't need the "extra" room in the center floor console, and it still feels a bit
weird to reach for the knob to change gears.

Only issue I've noticed, is if you are reversing and are still rolling a tiny bit and switch the knob over to Drive too fast, it doesn't always engage drive instead the D on the knob flashes. You have to move it over to Neutral and then back to Drive.
That has happened 2-3 times and it could cause an accident if you are trying to make a quick 3 point turn and get stuck in the road for an extra 2-3 seconds while the gear won't engage.
Chrysler, if you are listening, go back to the traditional floor mounted shifter and leave the knob gear change as an "option" for people who want it.

Agreed!!! I'm still getting used to the shifter being how it is. But zf is a good company. It's why I went with that trans. Not to mention mpg. I haven't had it do what yours has but I have accidentally put it in park 2times instead of drive lol haha

How frustrating for you. Hopefully it gets repaired and trouble free after that. My experience for the most part with electronic components is, they are usually very reliable and require little or no maintenance, less so than their manual counterparts, but when they do fail, hang on to your wallet. Of course there are exceptions.

Frustrating it is.....damn!
I would be furious as well and question my truck too if it had to go into the shop already.
500 miles is not even much driving

Hope this is the first and last for you

All automatics are going to be electronically controlled at some point. Might as well get used to it now. Dodge does use a Floor shifter on the Chargers with the ZF transmission, rather than the dial shifter. It's still electronic and not cable driven though. We might experience some growing pains, however.

It takes some getting used to the dial but it doesn't bother me now. I find myself reaching for a shift knob on the dash when I get into my fiance's Passat now.

How awkward is that? Its like getting use to the convenience function of the key fob and then getting into a vehicle where you still have to turn a key to get started...lol

Are you thinking a floor mounted shifter still has mechanical linkage to the transmission? I got bad news for ya....

Electronics do fail but typically will fail within the first few days of operation. After that, they usually live a full and productive life.

my only wish for the whole thing like that there were a way to over ride the electronic part and put it into whatever gear needed at the time manually. for example i dont know how many of you are heavy truck techs but when eaton first started putting automatics into mostly the freightliners they were a HUGE!! problem... but they made a way so if needed you could pop the floor cover off and manually shift it into gear. or like on the older cars when the key wouldnt work or whatever there was the spring loaded door that u would push a screw driver into that would allow you to shift into gear to move the vehicle. there has to be a fail safe!! lol also what about the steering on these trucks...where is the p/s pump? is it electronic now? is there even one? how does it work? what if that fails? lol crazy things happening with cars now lol.

No kidding, When I drive my dad's '09 ram with column shifter I always turn the fan control knob for the climate control before I shift into drive.
