My Ram Express 5.7L Hemi does not have the fancy computer in the center dash like the upper end models have. All I use is an Odometer that is tracking my mileage, receipts for fuel, a log book and a calculator. I wouldn't think holding maintaining a stiffer voltage would alter my odometer reading. Nope, all manually calculated other than looking at the odometer at time of fill up. Good question.

Typing this up, I just remembered a conversation I had with a local high end car Audio shop regarding the Big three that they also recommend on serious installs. He laughed and stated how some of the classic car owners come back and comment on how well there car now starts and runs after the audio equipment installation..LOL. He stated same basis that the stock wiring even in the older cars is sub par. The change increases spark output, starting performance but is obviously put in place to support the additional equipment. I was there to buy some 4 and 6 gauge wire initially to do this wiring upgrade. Inadvertently, their wire was crazy expensive quoting Oxygen free blahh blahh. I got all my wiring/cables from my local auto parts store.

I've done something along these lines on older muscle cars,to help with the headlight problems the majority of them had.
Interesting about the mileage increase though, but it makes sense in the fact you probably have a cleaner supply of amps and less voltage drop through the system

Hornet, exactly, less V-drop out under normal and or heavier electrical loads. I didn't measure the stock gauge charging line but visually it was probably 60% of the 6 Gauge I added and together they make up for a much lower inductance or should I say resistive path for the DC amps to flow. I love the way the Hemi jumps to life on cold mornings now at the turn of the key.

All,

Hi, just joined this forum to share an interesting find with my 2012 Ram crew cab 4x4 Express truck. I am EE electrical by trade and a Ham radio operator and installed my gear into this truck. Noting that the altenator is a nice hefty 160 AMP size I wasnt worried about power although I am running a 500w 10 meter RF amplifier. On key downs at full power (45 AMP draw) I noticed especially at night the head lights flickering pretty bad. I run 6 gauge from the battery to the radio gear so no conceren there. This should'nt be happening. The issue has then got to be with under rated stock wiring. This is where I read about the "BIG THREE" wiring change under the hood. Big Audiofiles running mobile amps etc use this change to beef up power delivery. This is where it gets interesting.....I perform the BIG THREE by not removing but adding in parallel addtional 6 gauge battery cables to the stock small cables running from:

1. The (-) battery to fender ground.
2. The Battery (+) to fuse box feed.
3. Right front cylinder head engine (available threaded bolt) to left shock tower bolt(ie frame connection to engin block)
4. added cable from stock altenator (+) output to Battery (+) post following stock cable.
5. I also beefed up the stock (-) ground run straight run down form the (-) battery post to the frame behind the front left tire at frame.

Ok, so I made 5 changes but effectively still falls under the Big Three change rules to follow. You can google Big Three wiring change and see those basic rules to follow or implement.

All cables simply doubled up providing an effective 3 to 4 guage conenctions.

Now, not a bit of head light flicker, voltage maintianes 14.2v charging voltage at all times.

But here's what else has occured and what I wanted to share with you.

1. Slightly brighter headlights.

2. Engine starts are far quicker...no lag in starter (Same stock battery BTW) It's more of a snap start vs the ruh..ruh..start. Starter has better power feed even though I did not increase the starter cable feed size.

3. Here's the kicker...I am seeing 1.5 MPG average increase in fuel economy!! I actually had a tank on a long mostly freeway trip to Monterey a couple weeks back get me 18.2 MPG! Otherwise very same drive to work and back. This has to be due to increased power delivery to the ignition system and a stronger spark through those independent coils.

This addtional big three wiring done by yourself would cost you about $30.00 tops in cable and dual bolt lug battery lead clamps all available at your local auto store.

Just wanted to share this out. I have a photo of my install I need to find and will add it back here.

Happy camper! Best upgrade yet since making my move to 5w-20w mobile one synthetic. Smooth an quiet....

PJ
Adding larger wiring is fine, but in picture #1&3 you show a added wire going from the top of the battery to the fuse block. From the pictures going off the top of the battery you have bypassed the fuseable link and I see no fuse in your wire.

I know it is only between 1'-2' long but you have no fuse protecting this wire that I can see in the pictures.

I don't know if you need to have a fuseable link going from your alternator to the fuse box?

The second wire in picture #1 has a inline fuse going to your radio which is good.

Just what I noticed, Looks like you did a nice job with the wiring.

This is interesting. Did you mention if you made these extra wires of that you purchased them. If the latter do you have part #'s. Sorry you may have already mentioned this I just didn't want to re read everything.

Hey I'm on my iPhone and I'm at work. So the text is small and it's easier to just ask. Lol.
