Default Need some Advice

So the head gasket is gone on the wife's 05 Chevy Venture Van. We have about 3k left on payments for it and it is about 2250 to fix. 117k KM on it. At a lot today and can get a 2010 Dodge Avenger with 43K Km on it and with down payment and the little trade value of the van probably around 8.5 to 9.k financed. Just wondering what you guys think out there? 6cyl Van down to the 4 cyl Avenger. Any advice on it? Like I said the wife's van would be paid on this November

Shawn, can your wife do without the utility of the van?

For myself, I would seriously look at fixing the van just 'because' of it's utility. Pay to fix it, and then because you avoided that avenger you enjoy a few more years without a car payment after November comes. And that will put a big smile on your face that day. What will you do with that $300-350/month

Careful, though. I fell into a trap and one thing after another kept going wrong with my Santa Fe. 6K and 12 months later, I finally had enough and got rid of the Santa Fe and bought the 1500.
So, if you want to keep the van, get a good look over done on it to try and guesstimate if anything else is going to need to be done on it. Of course, best laid plans don't always work - but it may help you make a decision. I wish I could go back to last year and get rid of my Santa Fe earlier. I hope you can benefit from my hindsight.

I am straddling the fence on this one. Working in scrap yards I will admit that I had a relative large section designated to the Ventures, Silhouettes, Montanas, etc...

I don't like the head gaskets and the design of the engines. The cooling etc... I noticed a LOT of them with bad engines and cooling problems. But they had new parts. I don't trust the work to be done on them because I saw a LOT of them that had clean top ends and new gaskets.

If you do have it done make sure it's done 100% correct and not just 99%.

If you still need the van then I'd say fix it and save the payments. But it HAS to be fixed and backed up.

I'd question the mechanic because there seemed to be a correlation between the timing cover and the head gaskets. The timing covers were usually new along with the head gaskets. AND I know for a fact that the timing cover was a major contributor.

So take it as a heads-up that the mechanic is going to mention the timing cover and water pump if he gets his hands dirty under your hood.

Drew that is what I am thinking as well the 2250 quote will get added to and now we are into the 3K range and now we are looking at almost a year of payments on the Avenger. See we really don't need the van to much it is an 8 passenger and with the 2 oldest boys they are really never with us. The Avenger is only a 5 passenger so if the 6 of us still here need to go anywhere it would be in my truck. Even the 15 and 13 year old don't like coming out with us much anymore so I don't see the purpose of the Van myself

I'd get rid of it. I think this is the 3.4l engine, isnt it? it's a chinese engine, a big pos, you will have a lot of problems with it down the road.
Not to mention it has some of the worst safety ratings, I would never put my family in that thing ever: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/sa...=99374#VIP_TAB

Here's a test: Do some research and try to find a used engine at a recycler.

If you can find a used low mileage motor with a speedo certification to back it up, it may be cheaper to have a reputable shop swap the whole engine in a day and warranty the engine if it's certified.

If you can't find a decent engine...It will give you a little more insight into what you're dealing with.

I look at these vans kinda like the Yugo. If you could find a Yugo that could make it over 20K then it's probably still running. If it didn't make it to 20K then it's a Ford fender by now.

Then you can drive the van home, sell it, and buy the avenger for less with the sale value from the van.

I hear canadian.bacon is looking for one just like it

Ditch the van, and go with the Avenger.

It sounds like you don't need the utility of the van, and from what Drew was saying you'll just be opening yourself up to future problems.

Drive with a piece of mind.

The Jeep sound great, though if you get it, I'm sure you'll lose the battle about who's it actually is LOL

good luck
