Smile First Trip in my 3.6

Made the first part of my first trip today in my 14 Bighorn crew 4x4 with the 3.6 I was pretty curious on how it would do on gas with the way I drive. I went 175 miles non-stop with the cruise set on 80, when I pulled off the turn pike the EVIC showed 19.5mpg. Now I know the first thing everyone is thinking is, good grief man, your in KS, it's flat as a pancake. Contrary to popular belief it's not that flat around here, it's not like we have mountains, but definitely not flat.

I think 19.5 with the speed I was running in a full size 4X4 is pretty good. I'm happy with this number, I have taken this same trip several times in my 2011 quad 2 wheel drive with the 4.7 at the same speed and the best I usually did was about 16.5.

So far I'm a pretty happy 3.6 owner. We'll see how it goes tomorrow as I'm headed about 3/4 of the way across the state from the east to the west. There's a few more hills and usually a bit of a head wind going that direction this time of year. My old 4.7 usually did a best of about 15 on this stretch.

at 80mph, the engine has to work much harder against the air. At 65mpg, you would probably knock on 23-24mpg

I know every truck probably varies on this but, my EVIC readout shows 1-2 miles higher than hand calculating the same trip.

I was doing about 65mph, enough to get the air suspension into aero mode and I was getting 29-30mpg, hand calculated.

I think the difference here is between US Gallons and the old Imperial Gallons.

Amazing how many of us north of the border still make the calculation based on Imperial Gallons. (I doubt I will ever be able to relate to metric numbers)

Either way I am looking forward to making my own calculations soon...

i never met anybody that makes the calculation in IMP gallons. To me a gallon is a gallon and it is THE us gallon. its miles, feet, inchies, gallons, lb. Canada should quit this crap with the metric, I hate it.
I think bushmaster is actually talking US gallons, I bet $50 on it. To put it clearly, he means about 8l/100km.

Yep got the like the difference between the 2, US gal(3.8l) and Imperial gal(4.5l), we are always going to get better mileage than our US counterparts.

I ran the second leg of my trip today, 226 miles non-stop, cruise set on 80 with a 20-25+ mph headwind. As I expected the 3.6 did fine keeping me at 80 but at times it was turning just under 5000 rpm to keep me there. The EVIC showed 15.8. I suppose that is respectable for a 3.6 with that type of headwind. If I remember correctly the last time I made that trip in my 2011 4.7 with that kind of wind I was getting about 13-14 mpg. All things considered I'm still pleased with the 3.6

Tomorrow I make the last leg, I'll probably head out on the back roads tomorrow and stay off the high speed interstate until the last 60 miles or so. Most of these roads have 60-65 mph speed limits and I may have a slight tail wind so in theory I should get into the low to mid 20's.

Just my luck, ran the last leg of my trip today and the wind switched direction, ran most of my trip with about a 10mph head wind. 146 miles with about 40 of them at 70mph and the rest at 65. EVIC showed 19.2, still respectable for a full size 4X4 IMO. I was hoping for one of those mid 20mpg averages I keep reading about, oh well maybe next trip.
